During the week of March 15, 2004, Elizabeth Beaudin visited the Universitaets-und Landesbibliothek of Sachsen-Anhalt in Halle, Germany to work on technical issues for the OACIS project with her German colleague, Dr. Lutz Wiederhold, Curator of the Oriental Books for the Library.

Elizabeth and Lutz collaborated on three important tasks in which members of the Halle Systems team assisted. The first task involved the production of a full dataset of serials from the Halle catalog published in or about the Middle East. In this phase, the guidance and assistance of Mrs. Roswitha Klappstein, from the Systems Office, was invaluable. In order to interpret the Halle data properly, we tackled the issue of transliteration schemes used in German libary catalogs. In this discussion, Dr. Kamran Arjomand (Persian Subject Specialist) and Dr. Volker Adam (Turkish Subject Specialist) contributed their expertise. Mrs. Laila Guhlmann, for the German Orientalist Society, was also very kind in making research materials available.

Next, we worked on the important task of designing connectivity between the OACIS system and MENAcontents, a system developed in Halle to manage digitized tables of contents for Middle Eastern serials. In this effort, we benefited from the kind support of Mrs. Sibylle Wegener, the database administrator for MENAcontents, and Mr. Robert Mecoch, the web master.

Finally, we began the planning needed to set up an OACIS mirror site under the aegis of the Halle library Systems Offices. Dr. Gerald Lutze was most encouraging when we presented the specifications for the mirror site. Mr. Armin Angelus, who handles networking issues, will collaborate in the mirror site effort.

The visit to Halle was a great success, in particular thanks to the support and generosity of Dr. Lutz Wiederhold.
