starting a basic search

The Basic Search box is located in the middle of the Search Home Page.

1)      In the blank box, type one text string.  Omit leading articles (A, An, The, L’).

2)      Click on one of the three categories (Title, Place of Publication or Subject). 

3)      Move the blue arrow next to “View Results?” as needed.  For example:

a.      Select the “Browse” arrow to see all search results on the same page. 

b.      Select the “Paged” arrow to see only 20 results per page.

4)      Click the “Submit” button and the Search Results page will appear. 

o        For example, to search for all titles published in Cairo (Place = Cairo), type “Cairo” into the blank box and select the “Place of Publication” radial button.  Next, select the “Paged” arrow and click on “Submit.”

·         The Search Results page will include a list of all titles (in alphabetical order) published in Cairo and the names of the libraries that currently house the title. 

·         The results for the search Place of Publication = Cairo:

           

Navigation

·         If the “Browse” arrow is selected, the results will be on one page.

·         If the “Paged” arrow is selected, only 20 results will be viewable per page.

o        At the top left corner of the screen the number for the total amount of records matching the search criteria (Place = Cairo) is found. 

o        As each page only lists 20 records, use the arrow buttons to move to the next page and the next set of search results.

·         There are additional navigation options at the top right corner of the page. 

o        Click on “View Results: Browse” to see the list of results on one page. 

o        Click on any of the two arrows to either start a new search or to skip to the bottom of the results page.

·         When finished reading the entries, close the browser to exit or use the browser’s BACK button to retrace the steps.

additional information on titleS

·         Click on the title in green in order to get more information on a specific title.  For example, if you select:

Accessions list, Middle East (Cairo American Libraries Book Procurement Center, Cairo)

The following results page will appear:

The list will include the names of the universities that currently house the title and specific descriptions about the title.

·         In order to access additional information on a title at a particular institution, click on the title in green again and get a “Brief View” of the Title. 

For example, if you click on the title housed at UT Austin, the following results page will appear:

·         The menu bar options at the top of the page also allows navigation of the site and provides additional information about the Title:

o        New Search:  Click on it to return to the Basic Search Page and begin a new search.

o        Result List:  Click on it to return to the search results page with the list of all of the Titles with under the search criteria.

o        Long View:  Click on it for additional notes of the Title.  Return to the abbreviated description of the title by clicking on the “Brief View” option of the menu bar.

o        Library View: Click on it for additional information used by librarians and researchers.  This view lists the MARC (MAchine-Readable Cataloguing) records.  The formats are standards for the representation and communication of bibliographic and related information in machine-readable form.

o        Help: Click on it for information about Basic and Advanced Searches and Naming Authorities regarding the proper spellings for places of publication.

 

error messages

·         It is extremely important to type in the correct information and select the correct category radial button when conducting a basic search. 

·         For example, if you type in the name of a city and immediately click on the “Submit” button, the search will be limited to “Titles” and the following error message page will appear: 

·         If you receive an error message, ask yourself whether or not you spelled the word correctly and if you selected the correct radial button (Title, Place of Publication, Subject).

·         Mistakes like including leading articles or selecting the wrong category will open up error pages.  For example, it would be incorrect to type “The Ottoman Empire” and select the “Place of Publication” radial button.

As “The Ottoman Empire” is not a “Place of Publication,” the following error page will appear:   

Remember to omit leading articles and select the correct category radial button!!!

Sample Search – Title

Title = Adab

1)      Type “Adab” into the “Search for” box.

2)      Click on the “Title” radial button. 

3)      Click on the “Paged” or “Browse” arrow for the “View Results” option.

4)      Click the “Submit” button.

The Results Page will look like the following:

·         The Search Results page will include a list of all records (in alphabetical order) published with “Adab” in the “Title” and the names of the libraries that currently house the title.  There are only 31 records that match the search criteria (Title = Adab). 

·         With the “Paged” option, only 20 results per page will appear.  To view the additional results:

a.      Click on the “Next” button at the top of the list to see the next set of 20 records:

The next Results Page will look like the following:

·         Other navigation options are found at the top right corner of the screen.

o        Click on “View Results: Browse” to see the list of results on one page.

o        Click on any of the two arrows to either start a new search or to skip to the bottom of the results page:

·         When finished reading the entries, close the browser to exit or use the browser’s BACK button to retrace your steps.

sample search – place of publication

Place = Bayrut (or Beirut, etc – multiple spellings)

1)      Type “Bayrut” into the “Search for” box.

2)      Click on the “Place of Publication” radial button.

3)      Click on the “Paged” or “Browse” arrow for the “View Results” option.

4)      Click the “Submit” button.

The Results Page will look like the following:

·         The Search Results page will include a list of all titles (in alphabetical order) published in Beirut and the names of the libraries that currently house the title.  There are only 641 records that match the search criteria (Place = Bayrut). 

·         With the “Paged” option, only 20 results per page will appear.  To view the additional results:

a.      Click on the “Next” button at the top of the list to see the next set of 20 records:

b.      Click on the “End” button at the bottom of the list to skip to the last page of records.

The last Results Page will look like the following:

·         Other navigation options are found at the top right corner of the screen.

o        Click on “View Results: Browse” to see the list of results on one page.

o        Click on any of the two arrows to either start a new search or to skip to the bottom of the results page:

·         When finished reading the entries, close the browser to exit or use the browser’s BACK button to retrace your steps.

 

sample search – subject

Subject = Religion

1)      Type “Religion” into the “Search for” box.

2)      Click on the “Subject” radial button.

3)      Click on the “Paged” or “Browse” arrow for the “View Results” option.

4)      Click the “Submit” button.

The Results Page will look like the following:

·         The Search Results page will include a list of all titles (in alphabetical order) about Religion published and the names of the libraries that currently house the title.  There are only 21 records that match the search criteria (Subject = Religion). 

·         With the “Paged” option, only 20 results per page will appear.  To view the additional results:

a.      Click on the “Next” button at the top of the list to see the next set of 20 records:

The next Results Page will look like the following:

·         Other navigation options are found at the top right corner of the screen.

o        Click on “View Results: Browse” to see the list of results on one page.

o        Click on any of the two arrows to either start a new search or to skip to the bottom of the results page:
