is the only access. Some of the catalogs listed below, however, contain

The catalogue is arranged by subject -- bibliography, biography, periodicals
and transactions of learned societies, history of civilization and culture,
and language and literatures -- within each broad subject by language or
country. The Oriental languages and literatures, the largest portion of
the collection, is further subdivided by language and a more specific grouping
by subject. The collection contains both printed materials and manuscripts
in Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Assyro-Babylonian, Sumerian, Sanskrit, Pali,
Prakrit, Chinese, Japanese, and Armenian; all entries have been transliterated.
For additional information about holdings in the AOS collections consult
the card catalog in the American Oriental Society Room (SML 329) and the
manuscript catalog in the Beinecke Library.
Arabic Manuscripts in the Yale University Library

This checklist of items in the Arabic, Landberg, and Salisbury collections
as well as a few items from the Hebrew and Samaritan manuscripts is arranged
by subject, country of origin, and then author within each subject grouping.
In addition, to brief description of author, title, and collation, this
checklist provides references to Carl Brockelmann's Geschicte der arabischen
Litteratur (Weimar and Berlin, 1898-1902).
There are fuller descriptions of the Arabic manuscripts in this checklist
in Orbis in addition to Arabic manuscripts acquired by the Library after
the publication of this checklist. Use the Call Number search arabic
mss or arabic mss suppl to find records in Orbis for Arabic
manuscripts. The Call Number search salisbury mss and the search
landberg mss will retrieve Arabic manuscripts in these two collections.
For more information about Hebrew and Samaritan manuscripts, refer to
the card catalogs for Near Eastern Manuscripts located in the Beinecke
Library, which provide author, title, call number, and subject access to
the rest of the Near East collection.
Catalogue of Hebrew and Yiddish Manuscripts and Books from

Sholem Asch's rich library documents European Jewish life and culture from
the 15th through the early 20th century. In addition to containing important
manuscripts and printed editions of his own works, this collection includes
rare early printed editions of the Bible and other books in Hebrew and Yiddish.
The collection also includes a rich selection of Bibles in manuscript as
well as marriage-contracts, dowry lists, and other miscellaneous texts.
Most of the items in this catalog are held in the Beinecke Library.
In addition to his library, the Beinecke Library holds the Sholem Asch
Papers and two related collections. Refer to the finding aids located in
the Beinecke Library and available through the Beinecke Home Page.

This three volume work provides a detailed description of the complete papers
of James Boswell. The collection held in the Beinecke Library contains over
10,000 items, thoroughly indexed analytically by name and place. The catalogue
offers a wealth of information not only about Boswell but also about the
society in which he lived and the illustrious people with whom he was acquainted.
The numbers assigned to items in this catalogue are preserved in the
finding aid to the Boswell Collection (GEN MSS 89) which contains additional
materials relating to ten generations of the Boswell family and span the
years 1428 to 1936 with the bulk of the materials dating from the eighteenth
century. The finding aid for the collection is available in the Beinecke
Rare Book and Manuscript Library or through the Finding Aid Database.
A Catalogue of the Cary Collection of Playing Cards in the
Yale University Library ... William B. Keller (New Haven: Yale University

The Cary Collection contains well over 1,000 complete or partial packs of
standard playing cards, approximately 200 sheets of standard cards, and
about 30 blocks and plates used for the printing of standard cards; the
numbers for non-standard cards equals those for standard cards. The collection
includes cards from most European countries and from elsewhere in the Western
hemisphere and span a 500-year period. The collection includes many unique
examples and rarities as well as a miscellany of ephemeral materials bearing
on the manufacture, advertisement, and use of playing cards.
This four-volume descriptive catalog, which contains almost 2400 entries,
is organized by elements of description, by country of manufacture, and
by standard and non-standard, suit system, and type, etc. described in
the Introduction, pp. xxv-xlvi. The catalog is the only access to
individual items in the Cary Collection which is housed in the Beinecke
Library; there are no cards in any catalog and no records in Orbis for
materials in this collection

This catalog describes the literary texts of the German baroque period,
1575 to 1740, limiting the scope to original editions but covering some
philosophical, historical, theological, and philological publications when
they address a general audience or possess "literary merit." The
material is arranged in broad literary-historical categories (for example,
"Religious Poetry," "Dramatists," "Silesian High
Baroque"), with commentary by Curt von Faber du Faur. The catalog is
based on the holdings of the Collection of German Literature in the Beinecke
Library. All holdings are represented in Orbis. Most books in the collection
including additions since 1969, can be browsed with the Call Number search

Checklist of Southeast Asian Serials ...

This checklist contains all serial titles in the Yale Libraries which
were published in Southeast Asian countries, as well as those published
in other countries concerning Southeast Asia. Titles were selected from
the Yale Serial Catalog, and the cards duplicated and subsequently photographed
for publication. The location, if other than SML, is indicated above the
call number. Holdings are given for titles held in SML and in the Beinecke
Library as of August 1966. Incomplete volumes are listed in square brackets.
Its most valuable feature is that it includes series of monographs that
have not been analyzed. The series are generally listed under the issuing
body and one can page through the statement cards and find titles which
are not individually listed by author/title in the card catalog. An index
by country, subdivided by broad subject has been provided. It also has
an appendix of serial titles awaiting cataloging.

and manuscripts on the science and technique of navigation as well as books
about the discovery and exploration of the coasts and lands of America.
Spanning the late 13th century to the 18th century, the emphasis of the
collection is on the 16th and 17th centuries.
Most of the titles in this collection can be browsed using the Call Number
search -- Taylor. Other titles are searchable using any of the other
Orbis indexes -- e.g. author, title, subject, keyword. The Taylor number
is recorded in the Local Notes field for folio items but is not searchable
through any index. Records for the manuscripts in the Taylor Collection
will be found in the pre-1600 file of the Finding Aid Database
or contact staff in the Beinecke Rare Book and
Manuscript Library.
