WEBVOYAGE
(OPAC) SEARCH INDEXES – FOUR-LETTER CODES
Command-Line
Searching
In WebVoyage, the MARC field/subfield information
used for searching is stored in three separate indexes: Keyword, Headings, and
Left-Anchored1 These differ from one another in what particular field/subfield
information is contained within, and/or in the way in which that data is
accessed when a search command is executed.
The tables below identify four-letter codes that can
be used for searching, as well as listing the specific MARC field/subfield
combinations that are accessed for that type of search. Following the tables are brief descriptions
of each index and the “rules and regulations” according to which the data
within is searched.

Series Added Entry – Uniform Title |
1 A left-anchored index search begins from the left side of the search string entered and moves through the character string to the right—i.e., in searching a left-anchored index, search results will only include those records that begin with the search string that has been entered (theoretically, such a string could be a letter, a word, or a group of words). The search term that is entered is treated as both a complete word and as the beginning of a longer word (or phrase). All headings indexes are left-anchored. The records in a display that results from a left-anchored index (or headings index) search would therefore all begin with the same letter, word, or phrase that has been entered. In a left-anchored index, the more characters that are entered in the search string, the smaller the retrieval will be (consider that entering an “a” will retrieve every record that begins with the letter “a”).
Example: If a TALL search equals “yale”, then the title display list would include Yale, Yale Art Review, Yale College and Yale Graduate School. A report prepared for the New England Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, inc, etc.
2 All four-letter code searches are entered on the “simple search” page of ORBIS2, using Keyword (must use and/or/not or “ ”) as the selected “Find Results In” selection. [If using the ORBIS2 Search Name, then select from the drop-down menus. Depending upon the type of search, these can be found on either the “Simple” or the “Complex” search pages.] If the search is comprised of more than one word, then it must either be enclosed in quotation marks (indicating a phrase search) or connected with a Boolean operator (e.g. “and” or “or”). Failure to do so will result in an error message.
3 These ORBIS 2 search names are found in the drop-down menu (“Find Results In”) on the Simple Search page.
4 These ORBIS 2 search names are found in the drop-down menu (“Find Results In”) on the Complex Search page.
Keyword Index: A keyword search is not left-anchored. The search term is matched against all of the MARC field/subfields in the Keyword Index, whether that term is in the title, note field, or subject, etc., unless the search, itself, specifies a particular type of match (e.g. “TKEY” would be limited to only those matches that occur in MARC field/subfield combinations that are title-related). The “Keyword Index” includes all of the MARC21 fields and their respective subfields that appear in a given bibliographic database. Each MARC field and its subfield makes up an individual record, so that 245 |a, 245 |b, 245 |c, etc., are separate records. Keyword searches can therefore be made of any single MARC field/subfield or combinations of MARC field/subfields. A keyword search results in a title display of individual records that contain the search string. Note that unless truncation (?) is specifically used, search terms that are entered must be complete words. Unlike left-anchored indexes, a keyword index search is not automatically truncated.
Example: if a TKEY search equals “Yale,” then the title display list would include 1940’s Radio Hour (which is a title in the Yale miscellaneous scripts series) 20 artists : Yale School of Art, 1950-1970, Yale University softball media guide, etc. (i.e., the TKEY search would include any title that contains the word, “yale” anywhere in the title).
Headings Index: The “Headings Index” includes those fields in bibliographic records that are subject to authority control, as well as fields in the MARC21 authority records, themselves. Since a headings search is left-anchored (see above), a headings search must contain exactly the same first characters as they appear in an authority record (read left to right). Search results will include headings where the first term exactly match the search statement, as well as headings that contain additional characters beyond those that have been entered (as if the end of the search statement contained an automatic truncation symbol). A headings search results in a display of headings and cross references that match the entered search statement. Selection of a heading then leads to an index display of the individual records that contain that heading.
Example: a headings search for the word
“novel” will bring up a headings display that includes the authority records
for “novel,” ”novel in history,” “novelists,” “novelists, English, in literature,” etc., as well as any cross-references
which begin with the characters “novel.”
A headings search results in a display for the type of heading searched
(e.g. personal name). If there are
titles associated with that heading, then clicking on the record number next to
the heading will bring up a list of those titles.
Left-Anchored
Index: Left-anchored
index searches are composite searches, which means that they are comprised of
topically related single-field indexes which have been combined to create a
composite search type with its own search name. Only two types of composite searches in WebVoyage make use of the
“Left-Anchored Index” : “JALL” (journal titles) and “TALL” (titles).
These search types include all of the single-field indexes for titles or
journal titles. Like the MARC21
field/subfield combinations that are included in the Headings Index, field/subfield
combinations in the Left-Anchored Index replicate the data as it appears in the
indexed field, beginning with the first character of the first word in the
first indexed subfield, reading to the right until it reaches the end of the
field, omitting subfield delimiters, subfield codes, punctuation, and any data
in any subfield that is not indexed.
Again, as in searches in the Headings Index, the system automatically
supplies a truncation symbol to the end of any left-anchored index search
statement so that the search results include records that exactly match the
search statement, as well as those left-anchored index entries that include
more characters to the right. A
left-anchored index search results in a title display of individual records
that begin with the first letter(s) entered in the search string.
Example: if a TALL search equals “Yale,” then the title display list would
include Yale, Yale alumni song book, 3rd edition, The Yale edition of Horace Walpole's correspondence, Yalensia [memorabilia of Yale
fraternities], and Ya`lezu Hasidim
(i.e., the TALL search would include any title that begins with the letters
“yale”).
