SCOPE & DEFINITIONS:

Oversize books.

SCOPE: SML and books cataloged for school and departmental libraries by SML cataloging using LC classification, local NJ18 classification, and special folio call numbers. (852 2nd indicator 0)

DEFINITION: Oversize books are those for which the collation statement reads 28 cm. or more in height and/or 20 cm. or more in width. The oversize notation uses one of the following, depending on the size of the volume:

NOTE: Prior to the use of Voyager in June 2002, oversize + was entered before the last cutter number, and the "Oversize" suffix after the line break was not used. Computer conversion programs have shifted the position of the + to the end of the call number and inserted $m Oversize.

Miniature books.

Volumes  measuring 10 cm. or less are considered miniature books and should be referred to Beinecke Library.

The plus sign with the Oversize text is used in call numbers corresponding to the above physical description for either height or width for all locations. (Art Library dimensions are slightly different.)

The word Folio is used in call numbers for Sterling Memorial Library stacks, most special collections, and all departmental libraries for items corresponding to these dimensions for either height or width. Art Library Folio dimensions are slightly different.

FOLIO IN SML STACKS AND STACK COLLECTIONS (e.g. JUDAICA, ZETA)

1. Monographs, multi-part monographs, and serials complete at the time of cataloging:

Folio sized publications are not fully classified. Instead, the main class letter from the Library of Congress classification schedule is used under the word Folio, followed by consecutive numbers derived from the shelf list. <Note that Folio is now used for all multi-part monographs (formerly called "book contins"), whether or not they are complete at the time of cataloging. For the memo updating the Catalog Dept. Manual of 1978, click here.>. Note that the date of publication  is not used in conjunction with special Folio call numbers.

2. Currently published serials:

Folio sized publications are not fully classified. Instead, the main class letter from the Library of Classification schedule is used, and the word Serial is inserted between the word Folio and the class letter. Note: for marking and labelling purposes, volume numbers are added to the serial call numbers immediately preceding (LC). <Manual updated Mar. 18, 1986. 3. Special collections at Sterling Memorial Library.

Folio sized publications for special collections are assigned full Library of Congress call numbers with the word Folio inserted between the location stamp and the call number. Exceptions: L&B and  Microtext Collections do not use the designation Folio. All oversize volumes in these collections will use the plus sign following the last element of the call number, a line break, and Oversize.

4. Departmental libraries.

Folio sized publications for departmental libraries are assigned full LC call numbers with the word Folio inserted between the location stamp and the call number.
