The Return of "This Old Library" For those of you reading yulib messages before 1999, you may recall the “This Old Library” series that gave updates on the Phase 1 renovations of the Sterling Memorial Library. Well, to warm the hearts of all you serial fans, the suspended title is back, under a new title, “This Old Library Phase 2.” Filter this heading to group the latest e-mail updates on the renovation of the Cross Campus Library, Machine City area in the basement of SML, the connecting tunnel, and eventually the nave and L&B Reading Room. Soon, I expect to also announce a web site where these updates and other information about the project will be maintained. An email message sent by Alice Prochaska on 2/24/03 announced the launch and membership of the Library Renovation Phase 2 Committee that she chairs. This Library Phase 2 Committee has met twice to discuss its role and meeting schedules as well as the role of its Working Groups; to define the scope of the architectural project; and to review and confirm or redefine the findings and recommendations, reported in 1999, of the Renovation Planning Committee chaired by Professor Linda Peterson. The members were reminded that the scope of this library project will be undertaken in two phases, with the first concentration to focus on Cross Campus Library, “Machine City” area in the basement of Sterling Memorial Library, the connecting tunnel, and elevator/stair connection to SML nave. However, planning for the full project will include the second phase during which the SML nave and the Linonia and Brothers [L&B] Room will be renovated. The Committee will actively facilitate communications with readers and staff both to solicit feedback and inform them of the project’s progress. Its work will also include prioritizing program needs relative to spatial and financial parameters, and assisting in designing library services that will continue during construction. Laura Cruickshank and Pamela Delphenich, architects from the University’s Facilities Office, along with Jon Ross and Geoffrey Freeman from the architectural firm, Shepley, Bullfinch, Richardson and Abbott [SBRA] outlined for the Committee members the stages of a typical architectural project of this scope. We are currently in the Programming & Conceptual Design stage, during which we will determine the scope, building systems and cost, and balance of expectations to define a clear understanding of the work effort. Our architects project that this stage will take seven months concluding with presentations in the fall to the university community. The next 18 months following this stage will involve production of a detailed set of Design & Construction Documents from which to build, with reconciliation of cost estimates and budget throughout the phase. The final stages of procuring construction bids and actually undertaking the renovation work are expected to last another 2 years. Two Working Groups, composed of Library and ITS staff, will assist the Phase 2 Committee and architects in developing the program needs and specifications for the renovated space and the operations of library services during construction. A joint meeting of these two groups was held earlier this week. Members were oriented to the scope of the project and began to review the program principles that the Committee had also reviewed from the earlier 1999 Peterson Committee recommendations. As these program principles are further clarified in upcoming meetings, details will be noted through This Old Library Phase 2 series of communications. Assignments between the two groups are being finalized, however the following people are serving on one of the groups: From Access Services: Sue Crockford Peters, Barbara DaRe, Christopher Killheffer From Document Delivery: Carol Jones, Maureen Jones From Area Curators, East Asia Collection: Ellen Hammond From Library Facilities: John Vincenti From Library Systems: Karen Reardon From Research Services & Collections: Nancy Godleski, Sue Lorimer, Alan Solomon From Information Technology Services: Chuck Powell, Director, Academic Media & Technology Services On Monday, March 24, the Phase 2 Committee will meet again with the SBRA architects. During the latter part of the meeting, members will tour the CCL and SML areas that will be within the scope of the renovation project.
