Some staff in the Sterling Memorial and Cross Campus Libraries may have
seen me with our Phase 2 Facilities Project Manager, Laura Cruickshank, this
afternoon escorting three distinguished gentlemen reading floor plans in various
spots in the buildings. I am very pleased to let you know that these were
Thomas H. Beeby, Gary M. Ainge, and J. Lawton Thies who were here for an
orientation to spaces and some of the people they will be working with over the
coming months. The University has just retained the services of their
architectural firm, Hammond Beeby Rupert Ainge, Inc., to undertake the design
and implementation of the renovation of the CCL and selected portions of
SML, our project known as "Phase 2A."
Just in case anyone missed Alice's announcement made a few weeks ago
through the LMC, let me repeat a few details about this Chicago-based
firm. The Principal Architect on the project is Thomas H. Beeby,
FAIA (Fellow of the American Institute of Architects). The firm has won
numerous awards and has extensive experience building libraries, including
the Hale Library at Kansas State University and the Harold Washington Library
Center in Chicago. Mr. Beeby is a graduate of the Yale School of
Architecture and was its Dean from 1985 to 1991. He continues to teach at
Yale as an Adjunct Professor, and his firm has been involved in several other
projects here at Yale University.
I expect to share updates under our "This Old Library Phase 2" heading, so
stay tuned as the preliminary design phase is about to begin.
