Monograph Binding

Approximately 20,000 books are sent annually to be commercially bound. The commercial library binding, conforming to Library Binding Institute standards, and consisting of sturdy coated cloth covers with acid free boards and endpapers, provides a useful treatment for heavily circulated collections.

We bind:

  • Books that are purchased with paper covers, either prior to circulation or after a fixed number of circulations. Paper covers are retained within the new boards. The decision of when to bind varies from library to library, based on the needs of the collection. Library binding prevents damage and loss of information since paperbacks do not withstand repeated circulation well.

  • Hardback books with strong paper, strong sewing or adhesive bound textblocks, whose covers have been damaged.

Books with covers that have significant research value, e.g. publishers' cloth bindings, are repaired in-house.
