TreatmentThe most frequently performed paper treatments include: Dry-cleaning, washing, deacidifying, sizing, mending, filling losses, flattening, tape removal and stain reduction. Book treatments on paper, cloth, leather and vellum bindings include: Full-treatment conservation, rebinding, rebacking, resewing, and minor and joint repairs, together with cosmetic restoration. All treatments are selected to stabilize and improve the object's current condition, prevent further damage, protect from future deterioration and to make items safe for use by scholars. Materials are selected for their archival qualities and reversibility. Original materials are retained as much as possible during conservation. The Conservation program upholds the Code of Ethics outlined by the American Institute for the Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC). Return to Special Collections Conservation |
