WHAT IS BOOK REVIEW DIGEST ONLINE?
Book Review Digest is a bibliographic database that cites and provides
excerpts from reviews of current English-language fiction and nonfiction books.
An abstract of the book is also provided. Book Review Digest indexes
reviews from approximately 100 leading periodicals published in the United States,
Canada, and Great Britain. The online version of Book Review Digest covers
the years 1983 to the present and is updated monthly. The printed volumes begin
in 1905.

ACCESSING BOOK REVIEW DIGEST ONLINE?
Book Review Digest can be accessed from the computers located in the
Sterling Memorial Library Nave, from all public terminals on campus, and from
any computer with a web browser and a telnet client at the URLtelnet://pancake.cis.yale.edu:30006.
From Databases & Article
Searching click onDatabases and from the alphabetical list, click
onB. Scroll down to Book Review Digest.
To Open
- CLICK on Connect to Book Review Digest online (via FirstSearch).
- TYPE your Yale ID number (social security number) and the first four characters
of your last name. If your name has fewer than four letters, leave the appropriate
final spaces blank. PRESSReturn.

SEARCHING BOOK REVIEW DIGEST ONLINE?
To Search
- TYPE eithersu: to search the database by subject,au: to
search by author of the book reviewed or by author of the review, orso:
to search by source followed by a keyword or keywords.
Note: you don't need to type a space after the colon.
- examples: au:faulkner
- so:times book review
- su:existentialism
- ti:annotated gilbert and sullivan
HINT: You only need one word of a work's title. For example, searching "so:times"
instead of "so:times book review" will still yield the New York Times Books
Review, but will also display other works, such as Times Literary Supplement.

DISPLAYING YOUR RESULTS
To Display Your Results
- PRESS the number of the document you want to see and pressreturn.
- PRESSf to scroll through the pages of the document and pressreturn.
- PRESSreturn to go back to main search directory.
- PRESSreturn again to go back to search results index.

MODIFYING YOUR SEARCH
To Modify Your Search
You may modify your search by eitherlimiting or"and"ing
To Limit:
- PRESSL and pressreturn.
- PRESS the number that corresponds to the limiting factor (e.g., 1=years,
2=type of record)
- FOLLOW the instructions given
To "And":
- PRESSA and pressreturn.
- TYPE the word that you would like added to your search.
- PRESSreturn. The new results will be displayed.

STARTING A NEW SEARCH
To Start a New Search
- TYPEs orsearch and pressreturn.

SAVING YOUR RESULTS
To E-mail Your Results
- TYPEemail and pressreturn.
- If you are in the record list (and not an individual record), TYPEe
and the record number.
- You will be prompted twice for your e-mail address. The record information
will then be sent to your e-mail address.
To Print Your Results or Save Them to Disk

LEAVING THE DATABASE
To Exit the Database
- TYPEbye.
- SELECTy when asked if you want to disconnect.

LOCATING THE ITEM IN THE LIBRARY
To Locate the Search Item in the Library
To determine if Yale owns the record found in Book Review Digest, do a title
search in the OPAC database in Orbis for the journal or book. Orbis can be found
on the computers located in the Sterling Memorial Library Nave, all public terminals
on campus, and any computer with a web browser at the URLhttp://www.library.yale.edu/databases.
If you are looking for a pre-1977 citation that does not appear in Orbis, check
in the SML Name-Title Card Catalogue for the name of the journal.
