Britannica Online includes the following:

Britannica Online and Book of the Year articles
More than 65,000 subjects addressed in articles ranging from concise explanations to comprehensive expositions and from historical treatments of subjects to current-events coverage.

The Index to Britannica Online
More than 400,000 references compiled, edited, and hypertext-linked to text articles for easy navigation. Additionally, there are more than 10,000 links to images and tables.

Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, Tenth Edition
The best-selling dictionary, with comprehensive treatment of words.

  LOCATION OF THE PRINT VERSION

A print version ofEncyclopaedia Britannica can be found on the upper level of Cross Campus Library and in Sterling Memorial Library.

  ACCESSING BRITANNICA ONLINE

Britannica Online can be accessed through the terminals in the Sterling Memorial Library Nave, all public terminals on campus, and from any computer with a web browser at the URL http://www.search.eb.com/

To Open Britannica Online from Databases & Article Searching

  1. Click onDatabases.
  2. Click onB.
  3. Scroll down to Britannica Online and click on Connect to Britannica Online.

  SEARCHING BRITANNICA ONLINE

  • Enter your search terms in the text box using keywords, phrases or questions.
    Examples:
    (word) einstein
    (phrase) albert einstein
    (question) who is albert einstein

    Britannica Online searches for terms independently so a search for albert einstein will yield searches for all records containing the word albert and all records containing einstein.

  • USE Boolean operators (and,or,not, adj) to qualify your search.
Example: albertadj einstein
will search for those terms as a phrase, or within fifteen characters.
  • Choose which reference material to search (Britannica Online andBook of the Year articles,The Index to Britannica Online, orMerriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, Tenth Edition) by clicking in the appropriate circle.
  • Click on theSearch option next to the text box.
  • Use the Pop-Up box to select adisplay between 3 and 500 articles

  DISPLAYING YOUR RESULTS

After you perform a search, Britannica Online will display a list of hits with a heading and the first paragraph of the articles.

  1. Click on the highlighted heading for the article you wish to see.
  2. Click on the highlightedindex links to see related articles of cross-referenced terms.
  3. Navigate through pages using your browser's navigation buttons.

  USING EXPLORE AND MORE

In addition to the searchable database, Britannica Online offers different formats of news and information from both current event news sources and its own encyclopedia Top of the page. At the bottom of the initial search screen choose from the following options:

  • Explore Britannica for browsable access to the Britannica Online Top of the page
  • Current Interest for news and current events
  • Image Tour for a selection of pictures and illustrations from Britannica Online

  MODIFYING YOUR SEARCH

  1. Use Boolean operators to refine your search.
  2. Click on theRestrict Your Search link while displaying your hit list.
  3. See thehow to search page for more advanced options.

  STARTING A NEW SEARCH

  1. Type in search terms in the text box at the top of an encyclopedia entry page.
  2. Click on thesearch button.

  SAVING YOUR RESULTS

You can save your results by either printing or downloading the information onto disk.

To Print Your Results

Directions for printing the screen you are currently viewing depends on your web browser.

  • For Netscape, click on theprint icon or chooseprint from thefile menu.

To Save to Disk (Download) from Netscape

Read the directions to download from a PC or a Macintosh.

For PCs

  1. Insert a disk into the disk port (Drive A)
  2. Open thefile menu from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
  3. Choose theSave As... option.
  4. Name the file with a.txt extension to view only the text.
  5. ChooseDrive A as the desired port.
  6. Save as file type.txt.
  7. ClickOK.

For Macs

  1. Insert a disk into the disk port (Drive A)
  2. Open thefile menu from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
  3. Choose theSave As... option.
  4. Choose your disk as the destination folder by clicking on thedesktop option.
  5. Double click on your disk in the location window.
  6. ClickSave or press [return].
