Connect to JSTOR Online

JSTOR (Journal Storage Project) is an ongoing project to develop a digital library in support of the arts and sciences on the World Wide Web. It will initially consist of about fifteen journal titles in the areas of economics and history and will initially contain approximately 750,000 journal page images. These journals are fully searchable.

ACCESSING JSTOR ONLINE

JSTOR can be accessed through the Research Workstation terminals in the Sterling Memorial Library Nave, all public terminals on campus, and from any computer with a web browser at the URL http://www.jstor.org.

 

To Open JSTOR Online from Databases & Article Searching

  1. Choose J.
  2. Scroll down to JSTOR and click onConnect to JSTOR (via World Wide Web).
  3. Click onEnter JSTOR.

SEARCHING JSTOR ONLINE

Search for specific information in all texts of the database by keyword or browse journals.

 

To Search by keyword
  1. Click on the linkSearch JSTOR from the first page of JSTOR.
  2. Fill in the blanks next to the search fields with the appropriate terms:
    Full-text - Enter keywords in this box.
    Author - Enter a full name or part of a name in this box.
    Title - Enter a full title or part of a title in this box.
    Abstract - Each article is indexed with an abstract; enter keywords which may appear in the abstract here.
      ex. game theory (Full-text)
      Martin Shubik (Author)
      This search yields thirteen records.
  3. You can further expand or refine your search by changing the field boxes.
  4. Change the search fields by moving your mouse to the field box and holding down the button.
  5. Release the button on the field you'd like to search.
  6. Change theboolean operators between the search fields in the same manner.
    Boolean operators include:
    AND - to look for articles with both terms
    OR - to search for articles with either the first or second term, or both
    NEAR (within 10 words) - to search for two terms within 10 words of each other
    NEAR (within 25 words) - to search for two terms within 25 words of each other
  7. Duplicate fields to expand or refine your search.
  8. Enter dates in thePublished between: blanks if you want to limit your search to a specific time period.
  9. Choose a type of journal to search by or leave blank to search all the journals.
  10. Click on the search button.
    ex. game theory (Full-text)
    Martin Shubik (Author)
    or

    Jean Tirole (Author)

    This search yields 28 records.
To Browse Journals
  1. Click on the linkBrowse the Journals from the first page of JSTOR.
  2. Scroll down the list of journals currently accessible through JSTOR and click on the one you want to see.
  3. Choose the date and the issue of the journal.

DISPLAYING YOUR RESULTS

The Search Results List shows brief citations for each of the records that match your search terms.

  • Click on the link for:
citation to see a full citation of the article
article to see the full-text of the article
page of first match to see the full page of the first time the search term appears in the text.
note: JSTOR uses GIFs of scanned articles, rather than text, so occasionally the picture exceeds the viewing area of Netscape.

MODIFYING YOUR SEARCH

At the top of the search results list click on themodify your search button. You will be returned to the initial search screen where you can enter or change terms.

  • Click on the search option in the frame on the left side of the window at any time.

SAVING YOUR RESULTS

You can save your results by printing them. However, printing from JSTOR requires a print helper application that Yale doesn't keep on its public workstations. You can print an article from JSTOR from your own computer if you have a PostScript (laser) printer:

  1. From the window displaying the full text of the article, click on thePrint Article option in the frame on the left side of the window.
  2. Follow the instructions for downloading the applicationPrint Local.
