Author (sorted by title): Search Help

This search is recommended for extremely prolific authors and composers (e.g. Shakespeare, Mozart, Bach), who have written many works or whose works exist in multiple editions and translations.  Enter a name in the Search for: box, as you would for any other Author search. 

Results are displayed in a Search Results List.  However, unlike the Search Results List produced by the Author (lastname firstname) search, the names in the list are followed by titles in alphabetical order.  Each line in the list represents the edition of a particular title, rather than all the works of a given author (Cross references point to alternate forms of titles ).

Boolean operators do not function in an Author (sorted by title) search.  Search Limits are not available for this type of search.

 Search Strategies:

• Enter an individual's last name first, followed by the first name. A comma is not necessary.
• You do not need to include the first name, but for common last names it is useful to include at least part of the first name.
• Retain the hyphen in a hyphenated name.
• If you are uncertain of the spelling of the last name, you can enter part of it.  The search will automatically truncate so a question mark (?) is not necessary.
• Where there are variant forms of authors' names (e.g., Dostoevsky, Dostoyevsky), click on the icon for additional name forms or related names.
• For names with connectives, (e.g. Carl Van Vechten, Antoine de Saint-Exupery) follow the conventions of the author's country or language.
