Long View: Help

The Long View provides a more complete catalog record for an item than Brief View. The holding library location, copies and volumes held, call number, and location status appear also. Consult the Brief View display for the most basic information about the work.

Search, Navigation and Output - Bibliographic Information - Library Holdings, Location and Status

SEARCH, NAVIGATION, and OUTPUT INFORMATION:

Several lines of information relating to the search are displayed in Long View:

  • Search Results:

  • A line identifies the currently displayed catalog record number within the total search set (e.g., Displaying 2 of 25 records, Displaying 1 of 10,000 records).
    • A search in Orbis never results in more than 10,000 catalog records, even when more that 10,000 records match the search. If the results set is truncated at 10,000, a warning message displays in the Titles List and Search Results List displays.
    • Subject, Author and Call Number searches are set to "browse" Orbis for the search term entered and all terms following in alphabetical order. Since this method does not create a distinct record set, the number of search results on each page always states: Displaying 1 through 50 of 50 records. This does not mean that only 50 records match your search criteria. You can browse forward and backward through this list using the  Previous and Next buttons.
  • Navigation Icons:

  • If a search retrieves multiple catalog records, it is possible to page back and forward, one record at a time, using the  Previous and Next buttons.
  • Print, Save or E-mail

  • Below the display of the catalog record information is a table which offers Save Options. For more information consult the help screen for Print, Save or E-mail. The format of the record printed/saved/e-mailed is not the same as the view on the screen. Use the Print Screen browser button if you want to capture all of the information in this view.

BIBLIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION:

The following information will display if present in the catalog record. Your search terms are highlighted within the record display.

  • Relevance:

  • A record retrieved by the Ranked Keyword search method displays a relevance indicator before the bibliographic information. Ranking Icon  Ranking Icon  Ranking Icon  Ranking Icon  Ranking Icon is the most relevant record.
  • Author:

  • The name of the person or group responsible for the work described by the catalog record. Only one name displays here. Additional names are found further down in the display, under the category Other Author(s):. All name headings display as hypertext links. Selecting the link launches a search for other materials by that author.
  • Uniform Title:

  • A title assigned in cataloging to collocate all variations of a work in a single filing order, e.g., Divina Comedia. German.
  • Title:

  • The main title for the work. This is generally the title as it appears on the material, although for some materials (e.g., photograph collections) catalogers devise the title. Additional titles are listed under Other Title(s) (e.g., Serial Key Title:, Variant Title:, Translated Title:)
  • Edition Information:

  • The edition of the work, when available from the catalog record.
  • Publication:

  • Information about the publication, distribution, or creation of the material, including the publisher or distributor, the place of publication or distribution, and the date of publication, distribution or creation.
  • Electronic Access:

  • Hypertext linked information displays if the catalog record contains URLs leading to electronic versions of the material or related electronic resources, such as a finding aid or a table of contents. Selecting the hypertext link will generally take users out of Orbis. Return to Orbis by selecting the browser's [ Back ] button.
    Link to Electronic Version
  • Description:

  • A description of the physical qualities of the material, including an indication of extent (e.g., number of pages, number of reels), and, sometimes, information such as dimensions, medium, and accompanying material.
  • Series:

  • The main series and any additional series for the work when available from the catalog record.
  • Notes:

  • General notes about the material. Some special notes are distinctively labeled, e.g., Provenance.
  • Contents:

  • Tables of Contents are displayed.
  • Subjects:

  • Subject information for the material is displayed. Most subject headings display as hypertext links. Selecting the link launches a search for other materials with the same subject heading.
  • ISBN, ISSN, Music Publisher Number and Technical Report Number:

  • These and other Standard Numbers are displayed.

LIBRARY HOLDINGS, LOCATION, and STATUS INFORMATION:

  • Library Location: Identifies the collection or branch library holding this copy.
  • Call Number:

  • Includes the call number used to retrieve the material, usually followed by information identifying a specific copy. Clicking on the call number, which is shown as a hypertext link, launches a search for records beginning with the same call number designation, which may indicate a subject similar to the record you have chosen.
    • If an item is listed as having "no call number", it is usually because it is an older item whose information has not been fully loaded into the online catalog. Contact a librarian at the owning library for more information on the item.
    • Items listed as UNCAT or In Process can be obtained by clicking on the Place Requests button at the top of the search screen.
  • Status:

  • Displays circulation information for the material (e.g. checked out, not checked out, on hold, in transit).
    • "In transit" means the material is in the process of returning to its original library location.
  • Special Information about Serials Holdings:

  • Additional holdings categories may display, such as, Shelved by Title:, Library Has:, Library Has (New):, etc.
