Orbis Telnet Access

Text-based access to the Orbis online catalog is available for readers who prefer a traditional Telnet interface over the graphical Web interface and for those seeking rapid response time when using slow dial-up connections. (Telnet access provides a limited set of Orbis features and is NOT recommended for most users).

From Telnet client software, connect to:
Host Name: orbis.yale.edu
Port Number: 4000

From a Web Browser, type:
telnet://orbis.yale.edu:4000

From a Yale Pantheon Server, type:
telnet orbis.yale.edu 4000

For instructions on configuring the Host Explorer Telnet client, see:
http://www.library.yale.edu/wsg/orbistelnet.html

Note: The Telnet interface supplies only basic bibliographic information and does not support many of the advanced features present in the Web interface. This Telnet interface to the new Orbis system does provide functionality equivalent to that present in the old Orbis system and includes several useful enhancements. Help pages are available (type ? while searching) to assist readers in using the new system.

IMPORTANT SERVICE CHANGE ANNOUNCEMENT
Enhanced Security for Telnet Access to Licensed Library Resources

Effective September 1, 2002, the Yale Library will switch to Kerberized Telnet authentication for secure Telnet access to licensed electronic resources such as Lexis-Nexis. When Kerberized Telnet goes into effect, Yale users will be required to use their Yale NetID and Password to gain access to these resources.
In order to obtain a Kerberized Telnet client (e.g. Host Explorer for Windows or MacSSH), contact your local support provider, or see the information at http://www.yale.edu/software/network/ If you do not know what your NetID or password is, or have forgotten either, contact User Accounts at 432-6627 or http://edserv05.its.yale.edu/acct/netid.asp
