Off-Campus Access ( VPN / Proxy Server )
Decorative Image

There are two ways to access library materials from off campus: VPN and proxy. The preferred connection method is VPN.

Connecting to Library Resources Using VPN: Preferred Method

VPN

What is VPN? Yale VPN (Virtual Private Network)

It is a virtual connection between your home computer or device and the Yale Network. This virtual connection is necessary to create a secure private connection between your computer and the Yale Network. VPN is recommended for more secure communications over a wireless network and is required for Yale wireless connections on the medical campus. VPN will also enable you to access library electronic resources from off campus.

Eligibility (who can use VPN?)

All active Yale NetIDs are automatically authorized to use the VPN service. No registration process is required. Terms of use When connected through the virtual connection, it is important to adhere to all University IT and ITS Policies.

How do I setup the VPN?

Download the recommended VPN Cisco client and be sure to use the "Yale wireless and library resources" connection profile to gain access to Library resources (this profile was called "YSM_Global" in previous releases of the client). You will need a NetID and password to download the software from the Yale Software Library . After selecting your OS, find the entry for "VPN Cisco Client" from the alphabetical listing of software. Download the VPN Cisco Client from the ITS Software Library

What if I have to use "split tunneling VPN" (YSM_Split pcf)?

If you must use the split tunneling VPN option instead of YSM_Global.pcf, you will not be able to access all library resources from off campus. In this case, you will also need to use the proxy server with VPN.

Connecting to Library Resources using the Proxy Server: Use only if VPN is not an option

Proxy Server

Why use the proxy server?

Use the proxy server if you can't use the VPN. The proxy server allows Yale users to access restricted library resources including databases and online journals from off-campus computers. It uses your NetID to authenticate you as a valid member of the Yale community. If you use a Yale PPP connection or a campus computer connected to the Yale network, you DO NOT need to use the proxy server.

Note: some companies or Internet Providers may be using a proxy server to restrict Internet access. Because of this you may be unable to configure your Web browser to use the Remote Authentication Proxy Server simultaneously. In this case you will not be able utilize these services

How do I configure my Web browser to use the Proxy Server?

A valid Yale NetID from the ITS User Accounts Office is needed to use the proxy server. If you do not have a NetID, or you do not remember your NetID and password, you can e-mail User Accounts.

Note: the Medical Library has its own proxy server, which is needed for access to certain biomedical resources.
