Yale University Library presents:
Internet Search Engines

In this workshop, you will learn how to use different types of internet search engines (crawlers, indexes and metasearch engines), and also learn some tips for finding people's email addresses. These pages serve as an online workbook for this workshop, and as a manual which you can consult after today's class.

What is a Search Engine? Have you ever tried to find a particular piece of information on the Internet? There is a huge amount of information out there, and it is in no particular order. Search Engines are one way to get the information you want. As with any database, it works better when you understand how to make it work better. In this workshop, we will analyse two search engines, and you will understand how to get it to give you the information you really want.

This workshop consists of five exercises:

  1. Introduction to Internet Searching Tools
  2. Internet Index: Yahoo!
  3. Single Search Engine: Alta Vista
  4. MetaSearch Engines
  5. Finding E-Mail addresses
