Above
ground, on the Cross Campus, all the top soil has been
excavated and removed from the site; now tar-like mastic surface
is being removed
Removal
of the Berkeley College stone wall now
exposes the top of
the Cross Campus Libray wall.
The red line points to the Cross Campus Library
wall

The
Woman's Table sculpture, designed by Maya Lin
('81 BA,'86 March, '87 DFA) is well protected during
the Cross Campus Library construction

Within
the Cross Campus Library, old vents have been
removed from the library ceilings

Demolition
continues in the mechanical areas in the Cross
Campus Library

Looking
across the open upper floor, the Cross Campus
Library looks quite spacious

This
shows where new steel beams will be laid and installed
before the concrete floor sections are removed along the
side walls of Cross Campus Library to create the
2-storey openings

Below,
the lower walls and floor space are also being
prepared for the 2-storey openings

The
structural pillars in Cross Campus Library
had drywall applied directly to the concrete,
but in the future they will be
attractively
finished with new materials

In
the Sterling Memorial Library basement, all abatement
precautions are followed to handle removal of asbestos

This
is how the "Machine City" basement
area in the Sterling Memorial Library looks
without the vending machines and without
the stairs to the nave. New wall studs for
the Room 2 extension are in place

Although
the dropped ceiling and stairs to the nave
have been removed, the ceiling
height in the Sterling
Memorial Library basement will remain low compared
to some areas in the building

There
is a maze of wires and pipes in the basement
ceiling, some of which need
to be replaced and others
clearly identified

Looking
behind new pipes and wall studs, one can see
the trench dug
out for plumbing for one of the new
rest rooms

Here's
the manually dug hole where the new elevator
will be built

The
removed dirt from the hole for the elevator base
makes a noticeable pile

Access
Services extended Room 2 is beginning to take
shape

The
space formerly occupied by Library Shelving Facility
staff is being renovated

Upstairs
in the Sterling Memorial Library, air conditioning
units are being installed
to cool air in the nave when the
popular Cross Campus Library ITS computer cluster
will be relocated here for the coming academic year

Tables
are set up for the bank of computers that will be
installed in the nave
in time for the start of fall semester
