Ceramic
tiles are in place

Finishing
touches in the tunnel are being added, including
wood shoe molding against the brick.

At
the end of the tunnel, the landing at the head
of the stairs offers a first glimpse of the tile frieze
above.

The
title frieze edges three sides of the entry at the
tunnel entrance to Cross Campus Library.

Workers
installing the tiles reminded me that
they still have to apply the grout and after that
the carpenters will add the wood trim frame to
finish this beautiful architectural detail.

A
close-up of the ceramic frieze illustrates the window-
like motif and shows the temporary plastic spacers
between individual tiles.

One
of Yale's mottos, "Lux et Veritas" (Light and Truth)
is designed into the center of the tile frieze. Craftsmen
based in Ann Arbor, Michigan produced these ceramic
tiles using techniques developed by artisans in the Arts
and Craft period.

Coming
up from the lower level, one can also
see the tile frieze above as well as an interesting
design on the stair risers.
