The Yale University Library Electronic Text Center provides members of the Yale community with access to electronic texts, multi-media resources, and web development tools. Many of these resources are accessible only in the ETC, from stand-alone workstations, but a growing number of texts are available over the Internet (please note that access may be restricted to Yale affiliates). Located in room 509 of Sterling Memorial Library, the ETC is open Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 1:00-5:00 and Wednesday and Friday from 11:30-5:00.
 
Listed below is a sampling of the holdings in the ETC relevant to African-American Studies.
 
African-American Newspapers: The 19th Century. This is a searchable CD-ROM that will eventually contain the complete texts of over fifty nineteenth-century African-American Newspapers. The first part offers Freedom's Journal, 1827-1830; Colored American, 1837-1842; The North Star, 1847-1851; and National Era, 1847-1860.
 
African-American Poetry, 1760-1900.
A collection of more than 2,500 poems written by African-Americans in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The poets include such widely known figures as Phillis Wheatley and Paul Laurence Dunbar as well as many lesser known writers, and the poems explore a multitude of topics, including abolition, children, civil rights, education, political topics, prejudice, and slavery.
