Intended to provide an overview of works related to homosexuality, this index is suited to support research in the social sciences and cultural history on the ostracism of homosexuals. The work includes the contents of an annual bibliography in the Jahrbuch fuer sexuelle Zwischenstufen (1899-1923), studies by the author, and contents from a number of other bibliographical sources from the years between 1834 and 1976, including the semiannual Deutsche Bibliographie from 1951-1976 and the Jahresverzeichnis der deutschen Hochschulschriften from 1887. Works are grouped by year in chronological order, and within each year they are listed alphabetically. There is a simple subject index as well as an index to personal names, which distinguishes works by a person from works about him or her.

In the "Overview of the Findings" (p. 16), Maggiore notes the articles and monographs cited in Lesbianism "are all non-fiction and have been selected from fields ranging from social work, sociology, and psychology to law, contemporary women's literature, and feminist social analysis. Contained in this study are the results of empirical studies, as well as judicial decisions and political theory. . . A judicious effort has been made to exclude any works whose perspective on lesbianism is negative or contain erroneous information." Lesbianism may be considered a supplement to Garber's Lesbian Sources. A cursory comparison of Maggiore's section on Family of Origin to Garber's chapter on Families of Lesbians indicates relatively little overlap between the two bibliographies. Maggiore's Lesbianism includes author and title indexes.
