Sterling Memorial Library
Rooms 214-215
Purpose: Although anyone with authorized access to the Sterling Memorial Library stacks may use the Andrews Seminar Rooms, they are designed primarily to support the study needs of graduate students in History. They are equipped with tables and chairs for group and individual study, the Charles McLean Andrews collection of works on Anglo-American history, and numerous assigned readers' shelves.
Reservations: The rooms are normally unlocked whenever the SML is open to the public and are open for study use to anyone authorized to enter the SML stacks. On occasion, the rooms may be reserved by members of the Yale faculty or library staff for talks or library training sessions; requests for such reservations should be made to the Librarian for European History [Susanne Roberts]. The rooms are not to be reserved for general, open public gatherings or in lieu of a classroom for regularly scheduled seminars or courses.
Food & Drink: Except for the rare major ceremonial occasion, food and drink are not permitted in the rooms.
Reader Shelves: There are reader shelves in both rooms. Those in Room 214 are available on a first-come-first-served basis to graduate students and faculty in any department. Those in Room 215 are set aside for graduate students and faculty in History who may register for one of the fourteen available shelves with the Graduate Registrar of the History Department. Items are left on the shelves at the owner's risk. Library staff will check the shelves periodically and remove library materials that are not properly charged out. (Faculty and instructors may use an assigned shelf in Room 214 for course related materials, though the items placed there will not be monitored as in the reserve collection in the Cross Campus Library. Contact the Circulation Department for assignment of such shelves.)
Collections: Materials shelved in this room are part of the Library's collection and are subject to library procedures and policies for acquisition, cataloging, preservation, and circulation.
Computers: A networked workstation is available in Room 215 for library research. Electric outlets are available for laptop computers.
These procedures will be reviewed at least annually and services may change to improve the utility of the rooms for both the History Department and the Library.
