A comprehensive index valuable because of the large number of important German periodicals, transactions, yearbooks, and other composite works indexed. The usual arrangement is in two parts, the first being an index by broad subject headings, giving in each entry the article's title, its author when known, and the reference to the periodical; the second part is an author index to the subject index. In 1965 merged with Bibliographie der fremdsprachigen Zeitschriftenliteratur [see below] into Internationale Bibliographie der Zeitschriftenliteratur aus allen Gebieten des Wissens [see below].

Published since 1954, Historical Abstracts indexes over 2,000 journals published throughout the world. In addition to key historical journals from virtually every major country, Historical Abstracts covers hundreds of journals in the social sciences and humanities that are of special interest to researchers and students of history. It also includes approximately 3,000 citations per year to historical books and abstracts of dissertations of particular interest for historical research. Article citations carry abstracts of 75-120 words or annotations of one or two sentences. All abstracts are written in English.The online version includes in-process English-language article entries (those entries for which abstract, subject terms, and chronologies are not yet available) prior to their inclusion in the print version.
