PUBLIC RECORD OFFICE (PRO)

Established by an Act of Parliament in 1838 in order to provide proper accommodation for the public records of Great Britain and to facilitate their free use, the Public Record Office is the official repository of original archival documents of the courts and of government departments spanning almost a thousand years. Throughout the nineteenth century and continuing to the present day, the work of preparing lists and calendars of historical records has progressed steadily. The Public Records Act of 1958 provided for the transfer of records from government departments to the Public Record Office after thirty years, while the Public Records Act of 1967 reduced the period that records are restricted from fifty to thirty years (Rodgers, Guide to British government publications (New York: Wilson, 1980.), pp.530-531).

In April 2003, the Public Record Office became part of the newly-formed National Archives.

PUBLIC RECORD OFFICE MICROFILM HELD AT YALE

PROfiles 1964 on CD-ROM [computer file]. London: HMSO, 1995- . Computer laser optical disks plus 1 user guide.
SML, CD-ROM Center
This selection of PRO documents from 1964 includes: Set 1. Prime Minister's and Cabinet documents (disks 1-5); Set 2. Documents on external affairs (disks 5-8); Set 3. Cabinet committees and defence documents (disks 9-11); Set 4. Comprehensive index and library CD-ROM.

Microfilm of PRO record groups and classes that Yale has purchased directly from the Public Record Office is given uniform call numbers as film gb [record group][class number], e.g. film gb fo 17.

To locate this microfilm most efficiently, search by call number (Local) in Orbis. In Simple Search, type film gb [Public Record Office record group abbreviation], and Search In: Call Number(Local). For example:

film gb c Locates Court of Chancery material
film gb cab Locates Cabinet Office (CAB) material
film gb co Locates Colonial Office (CO) material
film gb fo Locates Foreign Office (FO) material
film gb ho Locates Home Office (HO) material
film gb pc Locates Privy Council (PC) material
film gb wo Locates War Office (WO) material

PRO microfilm that's been purchased as a set from a commercial microfilm publisher isn't as easy to identify, and it won't be classed using its record group and class number.

In Simple Search, try this search in Orbis:

[record group][class number], e.g. "fo 17" or fo17 and Search In: Keyword

In Advanced Search, try this search in Orbis:

Set More Limits to Medium=Microform
Then Search For: great britain public record office [all of these] and Search In: Author
Or Search For: great britain [name of department, e.g. foreign office] [all of these] and Search In: Author

Not everything Yale owns will be represented in Orbis, so to be thorough, you'll also need to look in the card catalog under Great Britain. Public Record Office and Great Britain. [name of the department, e.g. Foreign Office] as authors.

Some institutions' websites are helpful in identifying what Public Record Office microfilm they hold:

THE HISTORICAL MANUSCRIPTS COMMISSION

The Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts is a standing commission first appointed in 1869. Its stated purpose is to inquire into the availability of papers and manuscripts in private hands that might be useful for the study of history, constitutional law, science, and general literature, and to bring them to the attention of scholars by the preparation of calendars and carefully edited texts. In April 2003, the Historical Manuscripts Commission became part of the newly-formed National Archives.

Accessions to repositories
The Historical Manuscripts Commission seeks each year to collect information relating to manuscript accessions from more than 250 repositories and record offices throughout the British Isles. This information is then made available at this website and published in a series of thematic digests which appear in a wide range of learned journals and newssheets. A full set of digests is available here, together with the textbases from which they were compiled, beginning with Accessions to Repositories for 1994. Earlier years, back to 1870, are reported in various printed lists and guides:

A circulating library, from Poetical Sketches of Scarborough, 1813 Charles Dickens, 1812-1870, probably the best-known and, to many people, the greatest English novelist of the 19th century.
