American periodicals, principally general in character. Arranged alphabetically
by author of book reviewed, with subject and title index. "To qualify
for inclusion a book must have been published or distributed in the United
States. A work of non-fiction must have received two or more reviews and
one of fiction four or more reviews in the journals selected." --Pref.
note. For each book entered, gives a brief descriptive note, quotations
from selected reviews with exact reference to the periodical in which
the review appeared, and references only-- without quotation-- to the
other reviews.Indicates length of review in number of words. Compiled
mainly from the public library point of view, the reviewed index being
taken principally from the general journals and not to any great extent
from the more specialized ones. Published monthly (except Feb. and July),
with annual cumulations.

issue, and an annual cumulation. Retrospective indexes covering 1969-71,
were published 1974/74 as v. 5-7 of the series. An author listing with
abbreviated citations to reviews. Now intends to index all reviews appearing
in about 450 publications. Reviews indexed are primarily in the fields
of general fiction and nonfiction, humanities, social sciences, librarianship

7 v.). Cumulates the citations for the years indicated. Vols. 6-7
are a title index (the title index was a new feature beginning 1976, but

- Indexes several hundred periodicals, originally all
in English, though a number of foreign-language titles were added in the
1970 volume. Several thousand book titles are now included in each issue.
Vol. 1 originally had no cumulative index but was issued in cumulated
form in1978; in v. 2-3, 1961-62, the quarterly issues are cumulated into
an annual volume; from 1963-, published annually. Originally "humanities"
was here defined to include history and some aspects of the social sciences,
but beginning with v. 11 (1970) the term was restricted to art and architecture;
biography, personal narrative and memoirs; drama and dance; folklore;

Literatur (v. 14, pt. 1- . Osnabruck: F. Dietrich, 1984- . Annual.) Title

in two half-year parts. Each part contains five sections:L pt. A, Index
rerum/Subject index; pt. B, Index systematicus/Keyword index; pt. C, Opera

From 1971-1983, full information was given in pts. B, C, and D. Currently,
citations to the book reviews are found only in Part A, the subject index;
