An important guide for the study of medieval history, based on courses taught by the author at the University of California. Part I consists of general works useful in medieval studies: bibilographies, reference works, aids to the study of history (e.g., books on diplomatics, heraldry, place-names), general historical works, and large collections of original sources. Many entries in this section have brief annotations. Parts II, "General History of the Middle Ages," and III, "Medieval Culture," consist of syllabi, subdivided into some 53 smaller topics, e.g. "Life of the Nobles in the Middle Ages," "Medieval Universities." For each topic, gives an outline, recommendations for reading, and a bibliography. English history is not treated fully, since Gross (see below) covers this field. To be used with Boyce (see below), which lists later studies. Old but still essential.

Supplemented by: Boyce, Gray Cowan. Literature of medieval history, 1930-1975 : a supplement to Louis John Paetow's A guide to the study of medieval history. Millwood, NY: Kraus International Publications, c1981.
Reference Z6203 P25 1980 Suppl (LC)

Bibliography, v.1-4; Index, v.5. Follows Paetow's classification as well as Paetow's practice of excluding material restricted to English history. Works listed in Paetow are not repeated, hence the section of collections of sources is brief. Largest sections are lists of studies grouped under "General History of the Middle Ages" and "Medieval Culture." The Table of Contents, pp.v-xiv, lists major headings in the classification scheme, while detailed headings are given in the "List of Subject Headings," pp.xlix-civ. Very valuable for its listings of modern studies, but must be used in conjunction with Paetow.
Quirin, Karl Heinz. Einführung in das Studium der mittelalterlichen Geschichte. Third edition. Braunschweig: Georg Westermann Verlag, 1964.
SML Stacks D116 Q57 1964
A manual whose intent is to prepare university students for the study of medieval history. Emphasizes sources, and includes study helps such as chronological lists of important sources, lists of popes and rulers, genealogical charts, etc. A bibliography, pp.292-363, lists sources discussed in the text. No index.

This edition (to be in 8 volumes) will include a greater number of non-German writings, but since numerous citations from the 9th edition [Subject Bibliography Z2236 D34 1931(LC)] are being dropped, the latter should be used in conjunction with it. The work as a whole is arranged in three sections: classified general section; aspects of German history arranged geographically; and chronologically arranged bibliography. No index as yet, but each volume has extremely detailed Table of Contents, and Vol. 1 has Table of Contents for the entire work. Medieval history appears in sections 163-274.

In earlier volumes bibliographies were followed by commentary on the year's work and reports of research in progress, but later volumes are confined to bibliography.

Available online to the Yale community Includes bibliographical references in vol. 20.
Often cited as OED, this work is the standard authority on the derivation of English words. Its principal feature is that it not only provides meanings, spelling, usage, morphology, etc., but also all changes that the words have undergone since A.D.1150; many obsolete words are also included. Data about words supported by copious quotations from English writers.
The CD-ROM version contains all of the information of the OED, 1933 edition. The dictionary can be searched in a variety of ways, not only by word but by phrase, definition, etymology, or even by author of the quotations used to show how the use of a word has changed over time.
The on-line version contains the entire text of the 22-volume Oxford English Dictionary, second edition (1989), which merges the original OED with the supplements prepared through this century. It offers a Quick Lookup option, as well as a Basic Search which allows you to browse entries or limit your search to definitions, quotations, etymology, labels, and more. Boolean and proximity searches are also supported.
