Arts & Humanities Citation Index (Philadelphia: Institute for Scientific Information, 1975- .)

An international interdisciplinary index to the literature of the arts and humanities, indexing the contents of about 8,000 journals, covering 1,144 fully and over 6,800 selectively . Those selectively covered are titles in the sciences and social sciences indexed by Science Citation Index and Social Sciences Citation Index, from which articles of possible interest in the arts and humanities are drawn. The online database currently indexes over 2.5 million articles; the print volumes and the database both go back to 1975. Published in three parts:
  • Citation Index, through which you can find what later articles have cited earlier books or articles
  • Source Index, an author index
  • Permuterm Subject Index, which offers keyword access to the titles of articles
ATLA Religion Database
Available online to the Yale community
The ATLA Religion Database is a comprehensive database designed to support religious and theological scholarship in graduate education and faculty research. The file contains citations from international titles and 13,000 multi-author works in and related to the field of religion. It also includes a full range of index citations to journal articles, essays in multi-author works, book reviews, and Doctor of Ministry projects from the following printed indexes:
  • Religion Index One: Periodicals (1949- to present)
  • Religion Index Two: Multi-Author Works (1960- to present)
  • Index to Book Reviews in Religion (1975-present)
  • Methodist Reviews Index (1818-1985)
  • Research in Ministry: An Index to Doctor of Ministry Project Reports and Theses (1981- present)
Though coverage is from 1949 to the present, not all publications begin in 1949.

Covering European and American art from late antiquity to the present, Bibliography of the History of Art indexes and abstracts art-related books, conference proceedings and dissertations, exhibition and dealer's catalogs, and articles from more than 2,500 periodicals. It is updated quarterly and covers 1973 to the present, with more than 469,000 records. BHA includes and extends the coverage of its two predecessor art indexes: RAA (Repertoire d'Art et d'Archeologie) from 1973 to 1989, and RILA (International Repertory of the Literature of Art) from 1975 to 1989.

    Essay and General Literature Index (EGL), produced by The H.W. Wilson Company, is a bibliographic database that cites essays and articles contained in collections of essays and miscellaneous works published in the United States, Great Britain, and Canada. More than 300 volumes are indexed annually. Additionally, more than 20 annuals and serial publications are indexed. EGL also provides full bibliographic information on collective titles indexed. EGL focuses on the humanities and social sciences, with subject coverage ranging from economics, political science, and history to criticism of literary works, drama, and film. The print volumes cover the years 1900 to the present; the online version covers 1985-present.
    Feminae: Medieval Women and Gender Index

    An index of journal articles, essays, and book reviews about women, sexuality, and gender during the Middle Ages. The database currently includes over 6,000 records for publications from 1994 through 2001 from more than 400 journals and essay collections. Publications in English, French, German, and Spanish have been indexed since the project began; materials in Italian have been included since May 2001. Covers materials about the period from 450 C.E. to 1500 C.E. (with Russia extending to 1613 C.E.) in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East as well as areas in which Europeans traveled. Supported by the libraries at Haverford College and the University of Iowa, among others.

    In 1971, Historical Abstracts split into two sections:

    • Historical Abstracts. Part B: Twentieth Century Abstracts, 1914- .
    History of Science and Technology (London: Mansel, in conjunction with the History of Science Society, 1976- .)

    The History of Science and Technology database describes journal articles, conference proceedings, books, book reviews, and dissertations in the history of science and technology and allied historical fields. It includes references from three bibliographies:

    Updated annually, HST covers 1975 to the present, with more than 119,000 records.
    Humanities Abstracts (Bronx, NY: H.W. Wilson Co.)

    Humanities Abstracts, produced by The H. W. Wilson Company, is a bibliographic database that indexes and abstracts articles from 400 English-language periodicals in the fields of archaeology and classical studies, art, dance, drama, and film, folklore, gender studies, history, journalism and communications, language and literature, literary and political criticism, music and performing arts, philosophy, and religion and theology. Periodical coverage includes some of the best-known scholarly journals and numerous lesser-known but important specialized magazines. Abstracting coverage begins with periodicals published in March 1994. Abstracts range from 50 to 300 words and describe the content and scope of the source articles. Continues:

    International Medieval Bibliography

    A classed bibliography with a subject index which includes citations to articles on a broad range of medieval (450-1500 A.D.) subjects from over 800 journals and many collected works (Festschriften, conference proceedings, and collected essays). The geographic area of coverage includes all of Europe and the Middle East "...for those areas subsequently controlled by Christian powers; it thus includes... non- European parts of the Byzantine Empire." (Introduction). The CD-ROM covers the years 1976-1995, while the printed volumes date back to 1967.
    Internationale Bibliographie der Zeitschriftenliteratur (IBZ) (Osnabruck: F. Dietrich, 1965- )

    The IBZ is an "international bibliography of periodical literature covering all fields of knowledge." It indexes periodical articles in all subject areas from around the world in German, French and English. The print volumes are divided into three parts after 1971:

    Iter: Gateway to the Middle Ages and Renaissance

    Iter is an online bibliography of approximately 230,000 articles and reviews drawn from over 400 journal titles covering the Middle Ages and Renaissance (400 to 1700). Updated daily, its features include searching by keyword, title, author and, for selected records, Library of Congress subject headings and supplementary vocabulary. Users may perform quick searches, or employ Boolean operators and complex phrases to combine terms in advanced search mode. Search results may be downloaded. A monographs bibliography is currently under construction.

    PCI Web is an electronic index to the contents of thousands of periodicals in the humanities and social sciences, from their first issues to 1990/1991. Every article is indexed. The scope is international, including journals in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and other Western languages. PCI Web currently indexes over eleven million articles in 3,536 journals. Every year, it adds records for more than one million more articles.

    Readers' Guide Full Text and Readers' Guide Retrospective

    Comprehensive indexing and abstracting popular general interest periodicals published in the United States and Canada since 1890, plus the full text of over 120 of those periodicals from 1994 - present. They cover news, current events, and all subject areas, including business, fashion, politics, crafts, food, education, sports, history, and science. The abstracts average 125 words in length. Two types of abstracts are included. Informative abstracts convey the content, scope, and complexity of the source article, and are the predominant form used. Indicative abstracts describe the subject of the source article and are reserved for how to articles, humorous essays, personal accounts, and recipes. Full-text coverage begins in January 1994 for most titles.
