The MLA Browse Index

The Browse Index feature lets you look up a word or phrase in an index to check its usefulness before searching.

Browse Index lets you

  • Verify that a word or phrase exists in an index
  • Check the spelling or spelling variations of a word
  • See how many records in the database contain your word
  • Check the wording of an exact phrase
  • To use this option, click on the Browse Index button next to the Search Type options.)

This will bring you to the Browse Index page.

Type a word in the Browse for: box, select an index to search in, and click on the Browse button.  You will then get a screen, with your word highlighted.

To include a word or phrase from the list in a search, click on it. This will bring you to a Search screen. The selected word or phrase will appear in the Word, Phrase box. Click on Start Search to begin a new search.

See FirstSearch's online help section for further details.
