The CDs must be in the computer for you to access the data.
Open the taz by clicking and holding Datenbank in the drop down menu at the top of the initial screen. Select the range of years you would like to search (1986-1989 or 1990-1996). The search screen that opens has ten fields. There are two ways to search: enter terms in the fields according to the syntax outlined below, or select from the list of all indexed words in each field. You may use Boolean operators when constructing a search. To select indexed words, click in the desired field and then click on the Index button on the menu at the bottom of the search screen.
date Datum (DA) The syntax is year-month-date, e.g. 19950308, unless otherwise specified by truncation (199503* will find entries from March 1995, 1995030* will find entries from March 1 through March 9, 1995, etc.)
length Länge (LE) There are three possible article lengths from which to choose: Up to 900 characters, 900 to 8250 characters, and 8250 or more characters.
source Quelle (QU) The source field allows you to specify different editions of the taz (e.g., Berlin, Hamburg). To see the correct names of the different editions, click in the Quelle field to select it and then click on the Index button on the bottom menu bar . A source name consisting of more than one word must be entered in quotation marks or selected from the index.
page Seite (SE) In this field you can specify the page number you are seeking.
section Ressort (RE) Section of the taz you wish to search (available only for articles from April 1994 on). Possible sections are Wirtschaft (business), Umwelt (environment), Eurotaz (European). article type Art (AR) Type of article you are looking for. Aside from the default taz-Bericht (taz report), you can choose Agentur, Dokumentation, Interview, Kommentar, LeserInnenbrief, or Portrait.

These can be found using the Boolean operators bis, und, nicht, oder (up to, and, not, or), which are searched in that order. For example, "Bernd bis Bertram nicht Bernhard or Elke und Schmitter" will find authors' names from Bernd to Bertram, not including Bernhard, as well as authors' names including Elke and Schmitter.
title Titel (TI) lead-in, title. Keywords can be searched in this field.
text Text (TX) Full text of article, searchable by keyword.
free text Freie Suche The free search allows you to combine searches from several fields, using the abbreviated field names that are in parentheses, e.g. tx=kohl nicht ar=agentur will find articles containing Kohl in the text but which are not agency reports.
