Microform: Newspapers in Microform and Paper

Newspapers on microfilm and paper are divided into two files: U. S. Newspapers and Foreign Newspapers. Both databases also include oversize hard copies of newspapers (Deltas). Materials are located in the Microform Reading Room in Sterling Memorial Library and the remote Library Shelving Facility (see note below).

The web accessible databases are inventories of the newspaper back files that the Library holds; they are not catalogs of full bibliographic records. They afford searching by free text in title and city fields, and by date range of Yale holdings. The U. S. Newspaper database is also searchable by state, while the Foreign Newspaper database is also searchable by country. The U.S. Newspaper database lists over 2,000 titles. The Foreign Newspaper database lists over 4000 titles.

The databases do not display detailed title histories and notes, for which readers are referred to the printed lists of Newspapers in the Yale University Library on the shelves opposite the public service desk in the Microform Reading Room.

The databases include newspapers both on microfilm and paper. For a separate list of all U.S. and foreign newspapers that are currently received, see the List of Current Newspaper Titles.

For a list of newspapers available online, see Selected Online News Sources.

For US ethnic and foreign newspapers held at the Center for Research Libraries, see the links on the navigation guide (left frame).

Notice to Prospective Users

We regret that staffing levels do not permit us to accept individuals’ requests for look-ups or copies. Most microforms circulate via Interlibrary Loan; they are otherwise non-circulating. For information about borrowing, see the Interlibrary Loan Service Lending Policies.

Holders of Yale ID cards -- which are non-transferable -- may use the Microform Reading Room, which is open all the hours that Sterling Memorial Library is. Others may acquire access through the Library's Privileges Office in Sterling.

Researchers should note that some of the microforms are held in the Library Shelving Facility, and same-day access cannot be guaranteed. Holders of Yale ID cards may make advance requests for LSF materials through the web form of the Library's intramural transfer service, Eli Express.
