Searching Tips
IMPORTANT: When you are not using all fields
in a search,
unused fields - except for Date fields - should
contain an asterisk (*).
To search an exact word or phrase
enter it in the required field.
e.g., Title : "New Haven
Register" will give you only "New
Haven Register".
To search words starting with some expression
type the expression and an asterisk (*)
e.g., Title : "new*"
will give you all titles beginning with "new", like "New
Haven Register", "New York Times",
etc.
To search any word or phrase containing some expression
you should use an asterisk (*) on both
sides.
e.g., Title: "*new*"
will give you "Boley News", "Alexandria News
Leader", etc.
e.g., Title: "*haven
daily*" will give you "New Haven
Daily Herald" and "New Haven Daily
Palladium", etc.
To search any word or phrase containing two or
more words that may not be adjacent, you should put an asterisk (*)
on both sides of each word.
e.g., Title: "*new*time*"
will give you "New Times", "New
Haven Times", "New
York Times", etc.
To search Yale Holdings, which show the dates that
Yale holds, enter the starting and ending dates that you are looking for.
e.g., "1/1/1700"
and "1/1/1800" will give you all holdings
between Jan. 1, 1700 and Jan. 1, 1800.
To search only those newspapers which are currently
received, leave Yale holdings ending date blank.
