Tapestry, Sterling Memorial Library

The tapestry now hung in the Library near the elevator lobby is one of a set of three that were bought by Mr. C. K. G. Billings, father of Mrs. W. H. VanderPoel, from French and Co. in New York about 25 or 30 years ago. It is Brussels work of about 1725 from cartoons of the school of Teniers, or at least under Teniers' influence. The other two pieces of the set are also at Yale and are now hanging in the University Theatre. The subjects of the series are "The Toilers" (in the Library), and "Returning from Market" and the "Archery Contest." The figures are small in comparison to the landscape as at this period the emphasis lay on decoration rather than on story telling.

Dimensions: 13' 1-1/2" x 12' 5".
