 Microform Collections

This guide lists and describes major research collections in microform, housed for the most part in the Microform Reading Room in Sterling Memorial Library. Excluded from this listing are works by single individuals, library catalogs, and collections too narrow in scope to be considered major. All the microform materials described here should be listed in the Microform Reading Room card catalog as well as in Orbis or the Sterling public card catalog; unless labeled otherwise, they can be found in the Microform Reading Room.

The collections are listed by main entry, and each description includes place of publication, publisher, and date, the number of reels, fiche, or microprints, and the film, fiche, or microprint call number. An annotation accompanies most records, as well as a note identifying available guides or indexes and providing their locations and call numbers.

To identify materials not included in this guide or to find newly acquired materials, researchers should seek assistance from a reference librarian.

The periodicals included here from the Newspaper Library of the British Library and cover every aspect of the surge of emancipationist activities in Britain between the passing of the Married Women's Property Act in 1870 and the gaining of full, universal suffrage in 1928. They also reflect the dramatic impact upon women's lives of the First World War. There is a wide range of political viewpoints represented on such subjects as education, work, religion, temperance and social reform; the periodicals, although sharing a common interest in women's suffrage, range from the evangelical and strongly pacifist Free Church Suffrage Times (1913-15), to the highly political Women's Franchise (1907-1911) and the Internationalist journal published by the Communist Party of Great Britain, Woman Worker (1926-1927). Contributors include Beatrice Webb, Millicent Fawcett, Philip Snowden, H.N. Brailsfird and many others.
