Glass Blowing at Yale
The work of Daryl Smith, Senior Scientific Glassblower at Yale now on display in Kline Science Library
Glassblowing at Yale, an exhibit at Kline Science Library (through Dec. 2008) features glassware made, modified, or repaired by the Sr. Scientific Glassblower, Daryl Smith, as well as photographs of him at work in his shop here at Yale.
There is a scientific glassblower at Yale University. Daryl Smith has held this position since August 2005. In addition to taking care of Yale and the community’s special glassware needs, Daryl also uses his skills to teach a semester-long class, Chem 565L: Introduction to Scientific Glassblowing. His shop is located in Room 014 in the Sterling Chemistry Laboratory building. Daryl’s projects may take anywhere from ½ day up to 6 weeks to complete. He sometimes makes special parts for existing glassware. At other times he may be found repairing a piece of glass equipment. In this exhibit, examples of pieces Daryl has created can be seen. More are on display in a cabinet outside of 014 SCL. |
