Finding Journal Articles - Chemistry

The following tools provide citations to journal articles in the area of chemistry:

Link to known online articles using the Citation Linker or the electronic journal list.

To discover or identify journal articles using keywords or author information use the following tools:

SCHOLARLY JOURNAL ARTICLES

Web of Science
Why would I use this?
* Covers the world's leading scientific and technical journals (over 5,600) in a broad range of disciplines.
* The database covers 1945 to the present time, with citation references going much farther back in time
* The primary feature of this database is citation searching. The records in this database allow you to see the bibliographic information for all of the sources cited in a paper as well as the bibliographic information for all of the papers that cited a particular paper.
* If you do not need to do a comprehensive search for information on a topic, but would like to see if there are any publications in mainstream scholarly journals, this is a good place to begin your search.
* Science Citation Index is an interdisciplinary database so it is also good to use when you are looking for articles that cross into other subject areas (biology, medicine, physics, etc.).

Note: This database does NOT search for conference proceedings or patents ... Scifinder Scholar/Chemical Abstracts (below) covers both of these areas. In addition, see the Yale University Science Libraries Patents help page for more information on searching the patent literature.

Scopus
Why would I use this?
* Covers the world's leading scientific and technical journals (over 14,000) in a broad range of disciplines.
* The database covers 1966 to the present time, with citation references (not as far back in time as Web of Science)
* The records in this database allow you to see the bibliographic information for all of the sources cited in a paper as well as the bibliographic information for all of the papers that cited a particular paper.
* If you do not need to do a comprehensive search for information on a topic, but would like to see if there are any publications in mainstream scholarly journals, this is a good place to begin your search.
* Scopus is an interdisciplinary database so it is also good to use when you are looking for articles that cross into other subject areas (biology, medicine, physics, etc.).

Note: This database does search conference proceedings and patents ... Scifinder Scholar/Chemical Abstracts (below) also covers both of these areas, and in greater detail. In addition, see the Yale University Science Libraries Patents help page for more information on searching the patent literature.

SciFinder Scholar/Chemical Abstracts
Where would I find this?
ONLINE: SciFinder Scholar can be found on all of the workstations in the Chemistry Library, on Workstations 1 and 2 in the Kline Science Library, and on selected workstations in the Engineering and Applied Science Library. For more information on SciFinder Scholar, and to download the software onto your workstation, see the SciFinder Scholar information page
PRINT: SciFinder Scholar is the electronic equivalent of Chemical Abstracts (it is also an interface to the CAS Registry File, the CASReact database, and Medline). A print collection of Chemical Abstracts can be found in the Index and Abstract section fo the Kline Science Library

Why would I use this?
* SciFinder Scholar serves as in index to chemical literature published from 1907 to the present. The database indexes over 8,000 chemical journals as well as selected book chapters, technical reports, and patents.
* Searches can be performed using an author name, research topic, chemical structure, chemical name, molecular formula, and chemical reaction.
* This is the most comprehensive electronic database at Yale for searching the chemical literature.

Current Contents
Why would I use this?
* Indexes top tier Chemistry journals as well as top tier journals in other scientific disciplines.
* Provides an auto alert function that will run your search automatically every time the database is updated (weekly). The results of your search are e-mailed to you.
Print: Abstracts and Indexes section of the Kline Science Library (Indexes and Abstracts are shelved in alphabetical order; current six months available).

Combined Chemical Dictionary
The Combined Chemical Dictionary is a compilation of the information found in the following print resources: Dictionary of Organic Compounds, Dictionary of Inorganic Compounds, Dictionary of Organometallic Compounds, Dictionary of Natural Products, Dictionary of Pharmacological Agents, Dictionary of Analytical Reagents. You can find information on the location of these print tools in Orbis.
Why would I use this?
* If you are looking for journal articles on a specific substance (how to synthesize, uses, review article, etc.), this database provides selected references to information in the primary literature about the substances included in the database.

Notes: You can only search for substances in this database; you cannot search by author name or research topic.

This database does not index articles based upon the contents of a set of journals. Articles are chosen based upon their relevancy to explain specific attributes of the substance being described.

POPULAR AND CORE JOURNALS

General Science (Abstracts) Full Text
Where would I find this?

Why would I use this?

* Covers top tier scholarly science journals (chemistry as well as other fields), as well as popular level information such as the New York Times Science Section.
* Easy to use search interface.
* Good to use if you are only looking for a few articles published in well respected journals - does not give you as many items to evaluate as a more comprehensive database such as SciFinder Scholar.

Academic Search (EBSCOhost)
Academic Search Premier, designed specifically for academic institutions, is the world's largest scholarly, multi-disciplinary full text database containing full text for more than 3,600 scholarly publications, including more than 2,700 peer-reviewed publications. In addition to the full text, this database offers indexing and abstracts for all 4,500 journals in the collection. This scholarly collection offers information in nearly every area of academic study including: social sciences, humanities, education, computer sciences, engineering, physics, chemistry, language and linguistics, arts & literature, medical sciences, medical sciences, ethnic studies, and many more.
