Introduction [revised 2004]- To enhance student access to scientific ideas and works, the library began a faculty recommended reading shelf in 1998. Faculty members were invited to recommend books, articles, or Internet site readings or resources. In the course of drawing attention to collective publications suggested in the intervening semesters, recommendations from faculty at other institutions are also included.

The Web page below provides publication information and Yale library call number along with the source of the recommendation, both in print and in person. For reader information, the designation of faculty member may differ somewhat between institutions. Additional related resources include: Amazon.com (see the read more section within featured bestsellers) or book review sources.

The recommended reading shelf is located in the Kline Science Library reading room near the new book area facing the glass doors. Displayed books may usually be checked out of the library for reader use within a few weeks of their showcasing.

Recommendations for this period are those listed in a recent article in the journal American Scientist. The list of readings, with call numbers, is provided below. To see the article electronically, first link to the database General Science Abstracts either directly at http://resources.library.yale.edu/online/viewrecorddetpublic.asp?whatcaseedit=139 or (if from a non-PPP remote address) through the Remote Access Proxy Server at http://www.library.yale.edu/pubstation/proxy/proxy_about.html . After connecting to General Science Abstracts, type in the search "books that shaped" and then click on the Search Now box.

Recommendations for this semester are those publications written about and by their authors in the Contemporary Classics In Science series, published by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), c1986. Volumes in this series include several at-the-time Yale-author essays (as well as essays by authors who later became affiliated with Yale), with remarks on why a specific publication of theirs may have become highly cited in its field (a "citation classic"). The concept of "citation classic" was used by Eugene Garfield originally, beginning in 1977, and the notes as to why a publication may be considered recommended reading are found in the essays in these volumes, taking into consideration the usual precautions about drawing erroneous conclusions about highly-cited publications (for a recent example, see Nature for February 14, 2002, pp.726-729).

At the time of publication, Yale-authored works in science (not including medicine) rated as citation classics and portrayed in the series are:

  • Anand, Bal K. and J.R. Brobeck, "Hypothalamic control of food intake in rats and cats." Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine (1951) 24:123-140.
    KLINE SCIENCE LIBRARY: QH301 Y28
    MEDICAL LIBRARY: shelved by title

  • Galston, Arthur W., "The adaptive formation and psychological significance of indoleacetic acid oxidase." American Journal of Botany (1954) 41:373-380.
    KLINE SCIENCE LIBRARY: QK1 A56

  • Massaro, E.J. and C.L. Markert, "Isozyme patterns of salmonid fishes: evidence for multiple cistrons for lactate dehydrogenase polypeptides." Journal of Experimental Zoology (1968) 168:223-238.
    KLINE SCIENCE LIBRARY: QL1 J68

  • Rhoads, Donald C., "The influence of deposit-feeding organisms on sediment stability and community trophic structure." Journal of Marine Research (1970) 28:150-178.
KLINE GEOLOGY LIBRARY and KLINE SCIENCE LIBRARY: QH91 A1 J68

For user information, titles of all volumes in this series are listed below. All volumes are located at KLINE SCIENCE LIBRARY: Recommended Reading shelf unless otherwise noted.
    Contemporary Classics in Clinical Medicine
    Medical Library: R850 C66 1986
Contemporary Classics in Engineering and Applied Science
Contemporary Classics in Physical, Chemical, and Earth Sciences
Contemporary Classics in Plant, Animal, and Environmental Sciences
Contemporary Classics in the Life Sciences: Cell Biology

Contemporary Classics in the Social and Behavioral Sciences
The last title is not held in the Yale libraries.

    FALL 2002 Recommendations

For this installment of recommendations, readers are referred to the online resource Faculty of 1000, from Biology Reports, Ltd. This is a source for ratings and rankings of current journal literature in the biological sciences. Whether there will be any archiving of the contents at any given time or if the intent is directed at primarily the latest literature remains to be determined. Yale readers may access this source online at URL: http://www.facultyof1000.com/browse. Some Yale participation and recommendations for published Yale research are included.

    SPRING 2003 Recommendations

Highlighted for this term is a recent article in Physics Education (January 2003, volume 38(1):pages 67-70), "Recommended reading of science fiction" in its opinions section. In this article written by Ken Zetie, 13 professors, curators, and other specialists, answer the question, "If a physics student were to only read one science fiction book, what would you recommend and why?".

Books or stories mentioned or recommended in this article are (and the person recommending):

    FALL 2003 Recommendations

The following recommendations are found in One Hundred Books Famous in Science: based on an exhibition held at the Grolier Club by HD Horblit, c1964, in the Sterling Memorial Library stacks Xq11 +964 H 1964. The text's main arrangement is by author with an appendix listing in chronological order. Below, grouped by city of printing or publication, the list of 100 works is shown.

    FALL 2006 Recommendations

The following recommendations are taken from "Reading beyond the textbook: great books of biology" by Jack L. Carter, professor of biology and director emeritus of the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study at Colorado College, and William V. Mayer, professor emeritus of biology at University of Colorado, Boulder and director emeritus of the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study, Bioscience (July/August 1988) 38(7):490-492. Recommendations came from 77 respondents to a survey. The full article may be read at KLINE SCIENCE LIBRARY QH301 A18+ and at the FES LIBRARY.

    SUMMER 2008 Recommendations

The following recommendations are taken from "The All-time essential reading list, here in one place, the 25 greatest science books ever written" by the editors of Discover magazine, introduction by Kary B. Mullis, Discover (December 2006) 27(12):58-63, 77.
