SciFinder Scholar (SFS)
is the interface to the following databases: Chemical Abstracts, CASReact,
Registry, CHEMCATS, and Medline. The SciFinder Scholar interface allows
users to search these databases using a chemical structure, chemical
reaction, research topic, and author information. For more information
on SciFinder Scholar, please see the SciFinder
Scholar information page.
Macintosh and Windows versions of SFS are available. SFS is only available
for Yale students, postdoctoral fellows, faculty, visiting scholars,
and staff.
Remote Access: Please note that SFS will only work if you
connect to the network from a computer on campus or if you use either a
Yale PPP modem or a modified VPN connection.
VPN without the Default traffic option.
PLEASE only change this setting when using SFS ... WWW browsers do NOT need this (use the campus proxy)
and will result in serious network delays for all users.
Basic VPN information
Special Step Required:
Step 2. Find the instruction which tells you to Make sure that "Use Default Gateway On Remote Network"
is not checked under TCP/IP settings.
Check this box if it is unchecked.
NOTE: This option instructs your computer to direct all traffic through the Yale network.
DNO recommends leaving this option unchecked unless absolutely necessary since it will
contribute to Yale's overall network traffic, causing overall performance to decrease.
You may only want to have this option check when you need to access these resources.

VPN for Mac OS X 10.3+
Mac OS X version 10.3 includes a built-in PPTP (point-to-point tunneling protocal) client, which allows you to use
an existing internet connection to create a secure, encrypted path back to the Yale network (This is called a
"Virtual Private Network," or VPN). The PPTP client is only available in version 10.2 and higher of MacOS X. If
you have an older version of OS X, and need to use VPN, currently the only solution is to upgrade your OS (which
has other benefits as well). If you think you need to upgrade your OS, please contact your local support provider
for advice (Faculty in the Arts and Sciences should send email to faculty.support@yale.edu ).
