Ranking Cited Papers using Science Citation Index

Using ISI's Web of Science you can rank journal articles for a particular author by the total number of times cited.

Note: The ranking will include articles published in and cited by journals indexed in ISI's Web of Science between 1973 and the present. The Science Citation Index database currently indexes over 5,600 titles. Rankings will not include books or papers published in conference proceedings.

  1. Go to Web of Science.
  2. Click Full Search.
  3. Check the box next to Science Citation Index Expanded. The default year range is "all years".

Note: Selecting a year range will not effect the citation count. It will limit the articles displayed to those published within the specified range of years.

  4. Click General Search.
  5. In the Author field, type the name in the format: smith ab (i.e., [lastname] [firstinitial][middleinitial])

Note: if the author does not always use a middle initial you can use the format: smith a* (where * is a wildcard character). Using the widcard will retrieve articles in both formats.

  6. In the Address field you can type "Yale" to limit the search to publications written while the author was affiliated with Yale University. Sometimes several different authors have the same name, so adding the keyword "Yale" in the address field will remove other authors with the same name.
  7. At the bottom of the page go to the SET LIMIT AND SORT OPTION and select Sort results by "Times Cited".
  8. Click the Search button.
  9. Your search results will be listed ten citations per page, starting with the highest cited article. You can look at the number of citations by clicking the article title.
  10. In order to print or save this listing you will want to create a marked list. Creating a marked list allows you print or save the ranked records in a format that displays the times cited. Click Mark All to mark the first 10 records displayed.
  11. Click Submit to submit them to the marked list. You can display the next group of 10 records and continue marking and submitting the records until you have selected all of the records you want to print or save.
  12. Now go to your Marked List by selecting the button at the top of the page.
  13. At the bottom of the page where you see Select fields to include... check the box next to Times cited and Select Sort Option "Times Cited".
  14. To display the sorted list on the screen, click Format for Print. A ranked list of articles will now be displayed on the screen for you to print using your web browser's print button. If you want to save the results to disk, click Save to File.
  15. To exit, click Log Off at the top of the Marked List page.
