1997 Journals Cancellation Project
The Yale Science Libraries embarked upon a study to help reduce journal expenditures.
We implemented use studies, cost-per-use analyses, and faculty surveys in order to tailor
our purchasing profile to the current teaching and research support needs of our users.
The timetable was as follows:
- Oct-Dec 1996: in-house journal use statistics gathered
- March: use studies analyzed
- April: faculty surveys distributed
- May: faculty surveys analyzed
- May-June: weighting of all factors to create preliminary lists
- June-Sept: departmental library committees (faculty and librarians) review lists
- Sept-Oct: cancellation lists finalized and vendors contacted
The library will embark upon another analysis in the near future, supplementing the
previously obtained surveys and use studies with new online use data. In many cases, the
acceptance of publisher "package plans" has reduced our ability to recover significant dollars
through the cancellation of individual titles. We will need to reconsider our options and price models.
New "seamless" online document delivery options now exist as viable alternatives for little-used materials.
