Chemistry Library

Introduction to Searching the Chemical Literature
By appointment. Please contact Andy Shimp
Not sure how to find published research in the field of Chemistry? Confused about the most effective way to use the databases offered by the Yale Science Libraries? This workshop is for you. We will talk about refining a research topic, choosing a database, and performing literature searches. Selected science encyclopedias, dictionaries and databases (such as: Chemical Abstracts, Science Citation Index and Current Contents) will be highlighted. These sessions will include:

Introduction to SciFinder Scholar and Beilstein/Gmelin Crossfire
By appointment. Please contact Andy Shimp
Each workshop will consist of two parts:

Part I: This session will be an introduction to the type of information found in Chemical Abstracts and how this database can be searched using the SciFinder Scholar interface. We will talk about performing a search for information on a topic, a specific author and a chemical substance.

Part II: For users who have not attempted to use the Beilstein/Gmelin database or for those who are frustrated by its cryptic design, this session will take you through the steps of logging on; defining a fact and structure query; displaying answer sets, structures, reactions, data, and literature citations; and exporting data.
