Sterling Chemistry Library and Kline
Science Library
Currently, the library materials of interest to chemists at Yale are primarily
housed in the Sterling Chemistry Library, the Kline Science Library, and
the Engineering and Applied Science Library. The Sterling Chemistry Library
is a non-circulating collection of reference materials, older books, and
some (but not all) of the chemistry journals held by the Yale libraries.
The Kline Science Library has a large circulating collection of materials
in chemistry as well as other areas of science. Many additional reference
resources are available in the Kline Science Library as well as newer chemistry
books, and many chemistry journals. Users can also access many chemistry
resources and journals online from the Chemistry
Library Resouces page.
Types of Materials
Monographs: There have been few monographs purchased for the Chemistry
Library since the late 1970's. Newer monographs have been purchased by and
housed at the Kline Science Library. At present there are approximately
1,800 books at the Sterling Chemistry Library and approximately 7,800 books
on chemical subjects at the Kline Science Library.
Serials: The Chemistry Library currently subscribes to approximately
100 journals and series. While the Kline Science Library does not break
down their journal subscriptions by subject, the number of currently subscribed
to chemistry titles certainly exceeds those at the Chemistry Library.
Electronic Databases: The Sterling Chemistry Library provides access
to numerous electronic databases and electronic journals. Please see the
Chemistry
Library Resources page for more information about electronic resources.
Time Span Covered
The journal collections in both the Sterling Chemistry and
the Kline Science Libraries begin with some of the earliest scientific journals
published by the relevant scholarly societies. Thus, Yale owns, among others,
the journals of the Chemical Society (London) and the American Chemical
Society from their first volumes. The monograph collection of the Chemistry
Library mainly consists of titles from the current century; as mentioned
before, the Kline Science Library houses the newest chemistry books as well
as some older materials including works by Lavoisier from the mid-eighteenth
century.
Subject Strenghts
The chemistry subjects collected at Yale include
the traditional areas of general, inorganic, organic, biochemistry, and
physical chemistry. In addition, the interdisciplinary areas of biological
chemistry, geochemistry (housed in the Geology Library), crystallography
and spectroscopy (materials divided among the Chemistry, Kline Science,
Geology and Engineering Libraries), and medicinal chemistry (shared with
the Medical Library) are also collected. Since the University does not have
a course of study in the area of analytical chemistry, most materials in
the subject area are restricted to analytical techniques applied to other
chemistry disciplines.
Reference Collections
One strong area of reference materials is that of those tools
used for spectroscopic identification of compounds. In addition, the libraries
house a good collection of references that provide physical and chemical
properties data.
Related Collections at Yale
Smaller pockets of chemistry items can be found in
the Engineering
& Applied Sciences Library where most of the chemical engineering
materials are collected, the Geology
Library where geochemistry materials are collected, and the Cushing/Whitney
Medical Library which houses information on medicinal chemistry.
