Installing the Beilstein Commander 2000 - Macintosh

The following is a version of David Waugh's Macintosh installation notes revised for Yale users.

The Beilstein Commander 2000 software is available from:

Instructions for installing Commander 2000

Macintosh

Note:  You will need the following information to successfully complete this installation and use Commander2000:

   User ID
   Password
   Group name

You should obtain this information from David Stern (2-9519).

If you are unsuccessful with this installation, please contact David Stern (2-9519).

1. Launch the installer.

2. If previous versions of Commander 2000 were installed and you are attempting to install it in the same location, you will be warned that the contents of the old folder will be erased.

3. The installer will copy the files and then allow you to quit the installer.

4. Launch Commander and then initiate a session by clicking on the red cross arrows icon.

5. You will get a "Crossfire Server Profiles, create a new profile" dialog box. Select "New.."

6. You will now get a "Crossfire Server Profile" dialog box. Following are the parameters required for the Wisconsin Host Server. All settings are the default except for host address: o Host: Beilstein.library.wisc.edu o OS: AIX o Crossfire Directories: Program: /xfire/bin Root: /xfire Note: It is no longer necessary to modify the login script.

7. Click on the Communication Tab and check to be sure the Port is set to XFIRE and the PortNumber is 8001.

8. After making the changes above hit OK.

9. You will get a "Crossfire Server Profiles, create a new profile" dialog box. Select the profile you just created.

10. The last item to complete is putting in the user id and password for your university. When prompted, enter the user id and password - all in lower case. If you don't want to be prompted for the user id and password each time you use Commander, you can select the box to remember the user id and password. Since this requires a change to the profile, you will be prompted for the profile password - not to be confused with the password for your campus user id. If you didn't assign one, hit OK.

Known bugs

While Commander will function under earlier versions of Mac OS, the help files only work under Mac OS 9.
