May 17, 2006, SML 410
1. Attendance
Present: Eileen Smith (chair), Michael Forstrom (recording), Marsha Garman, Kevin Glick, Kelly, Hovendick, Jennifer Krivickas, Este Pope, and Cynthia Roman.
Absent: Camilla Tubbs
2. Minutes
Minutes were approved from the May 3rd meeting and will be posted on the SCOPA website.
E.S. reminded the committee that the June 7th meeting would be held in the SML Lecture Hall so that Andrew Gray of Library HR could introduce the group to the room’s computer and audio-visual equipment.
E.S. also announced that Abdul Hannawi provided an electronic copy of his March 2006 forum on “The Role of the Arabs in the Introduction of Paper into Europe” for the SCOPA website (accessible via the SCOPA Forums link) and that the committee will meet again in August in order to plan for the new librarians orientation tentatively scheduled for late August.
Based on the experience of SCOPA coordinators at recent forums, the committee proposed two revisions to C.R.’s May draft of the guidelines. Draft items 5 and 6 of the final section relating to the introduction of the speaker propose that, at end of presentation, the SCOPA coordinator announce the next forum or event and remind the audience of the SCOPA website for suggestions and the comment form. Because some attendees leave prior to the conclusion of the talk and because the talk tends to break up quickly upon its conclusion, it was agreed that these items should be announced, if and when necessary, during the introduction. Item 6 may also be dropped.
5. Recording forum attendance
Seventeen people attended the SCOPA Grants forum on May 5, 2006.
6. Upcoming and summer forums
K.G. was considering July 11 for the summer film, and C.T. is planning the CT History Online forum for early July.
7. Fall semester
E.S. asked committee members to use the next two weeks to think about dates for fall semester forums that are already planned in preparation for setting the calendar at the June 7 SCOPA meeting.
Diane Turner recommended the new ILTS director as a future forum speaker. Since the director’s start date is not known, E.S. proposed we consider this for early 2007.
8. Summer project: updating SCOPA web pages
At our next meeting, documentation relating to the SCOPA website will be divided up for committee members to review over the summer.
9 Subcommittee
reports
M.F. reported on changes to the updated publications list on the website: 20 citations were added, citations for items dating from 2001 and earlier were deleted, and when someone has more than one or multiple citations, citations are organized from the most recent (top) to the oldest (bottom).
K.H. reported that mentors and mentees have now been paired up.
