SCOPA Minutes: 09/02/99
Present: Suzanne Eggleston, Tom Hyry (Recorder), Jennifer Kostelnik, Xin Li, Jim Shetler (Chair), Dajin Sun, Diane Turner
Absent: Erika Heinen
- We discussed the mentoring focus group scheduled for October 5th. Jennifer offered some slight revisions to the announcement Tom drafted. He agreed to make changes and send out a second draft for consideration. It was agreed the announcement should be sent out by the end of the week.
- Jim will put out a statement regarding the Jean Hirons forum, to be sent out early next week.
- We have set two dates for Scott's forum in November. He will focus on Phase II renovation, organizational changes within the library, and perhaps digital library initiatives. Diane suggested we provide a mechanism for people to send in questions anonymously for Scott to address and we agreed on this idea.
- Diane brought up the orientation program for new librarians that SCOPA runs. We proposed the morning Tuesday October 12 as a tentative date, depending on whether participants can make that time. Tom agreed to contact the participants and will report on it at the next meeting.
- Prospective forums: Audrey Novak on project management (Jim will arrange.), Will Wheeler on his distance education project. Diane suggested perhaps working in Danuta and/or Dean Brodhead on this topic.
- Website updates. The need to "go live" with this resource was expressed and the idea that once we announced the site, we would be able to get more contributors to it.
- The meeting ended with two very interesting and possibly related forum ideas. Dajin suggested that Scott do a forum on the role of the library in the scholarly communication process. Jennifer suggested a forum on electronic journal pricing and acquisition, possibly involving the public relations director for SPARC (Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition).
The meeting adjourned at 12:30pm.
