ANNOUNCEMENTS
- Tom announced that both the SCOPA Fall Series Session I and the last new librarians' orientation went very well. The new librarians' orientation was especially well attended and received by the attendees. Compared with the previous ones, this has been the best orientation so far.
- Erika pointed out that despite of the good attendance, she missed out one new librarian, whose name was not on the notification list she had before the orientation. Tom suggested compiling a complete new librarian list for future orientations.
- Erika mentioned that she had constructed a web page for SCOPA new librarians' orientation and would add some links to and from the SCOPA home page before sending out the URL to the SCOPA group for review.
- Dajin reported that he had mounted Professor Apfel's Powerpoint presentation for Session I on the SCOPA Fall Series web page so that people who missed the first forum could look at it before attending Sessions II and III.
UPCOMING FORUMS
- Fall Series Session II
All travel arrangements have been confirmed with the guest speakers. Step will make an announcement to the SCOPA group for the lunch reservation she has made at Roomba. Jennifer will send out the second announcement as a reminder to YULIB.
- Fall Series Session III
Step has received confirmation from two of the three speakers for Session III. It will take place as scheduled on November 20 at 3 p.m. in the Lecture Hall. Unlike the two preceding sessions, there will be no lunch arrangement for Session III but refreshments will be provided. Step will make sure that microphones are provided for the speakers and that there will be no drilling outside the Lecture Hall while the forum is taking place.
- ORBIS2 Migration Updates
Audrey and Scott will present another forum to provide updates on ORBIS2 migration, but the date of the forum has yet to be decided. The week of December 11-15 was proposed as a likely option.
- University Archives Tercentennial Forum
Tom reported that the University Archives special forum would be pushed further back from November 26 into December. Tom will keep the group posted of the progress.
- Forum on the National Academy of Sciences and Library of Congress Strategy for Archiving Technology
Ellen reported that the forum on the National Academy of Sciences and Library of Congress Strategy for Archiving Technology has been scheduled for January 23-24, 2001.
- Forum by Kris Hammond
The date for the Kris Hammond forum has not been decided yet.
SCOPA GRANTS
- Erika reported that three applicants were hopeful to receive the 2001 grant awards and a call was made to seek two additional reviewers from LMC to review the applications. Erika will schedule a meeting with Ellen, Cindy and Jennifer to further discuss the grant awards.
- Erika also brought up the question she heard from several people as to who was eligible for SCOPA grants. It was agreed that SCOPA grants were intended for both librarians and non-librarian M&Ps, and therefore, all M&P staff should be encouraged to apply. She also mentioned that the concern for supervisors' disapproval obviously prevented some possible candidates to apply for SCOPA grants.
OTHER TOPICS
- Tom suggested that some time be spent in SCOPA December meetings on the planning of SCOPA activities for the coming year.
- Tom, Step and Erika will schedule a meeting soon to discuss the further development of the library professional publications web page on the SCOPA website.
Next Meeting
- The next SCOPA meeting is rescheduled from November 20 to November 27 at 2 PM in Room 411.
Respectfully submitted,
Dajin Sun
