SCOPA Meeting Minutes

SCOPA Minutes: 4/8/99 Meeting

Present: Suzanne Eggleston, Erika Heinen, Tom Hyry (recorder), Jennifer Kostelnik, Xin Li, Jim Shetler (chair), Dajin Sun.

Absent: Diane Turner

Announcements:

A. SCOPA welcomed Gunta Jeluskina, Intern at the Slavic Collection, who sat in on the meeting.

B. Suzanne and Jim summarized their experience reporting to LMC for the benefit of those who missed the last meeting.

C. The next meeting will be April 22. Jim will announce the time.

Web site update:

A. Erika reported that she has confirmed all of the meeting/training spaces listed on the SCOPA web page ( http://www.library.yale.edu/scopa/mtgspaces.html) and Dajin and she are in the process of updating and enhancing the page.

B. Erika reported that she received from Paul Conway information regarding his recent publications that we can use to begin building a web resource to record the publication achievement of Yale librarians. A discussion followed where some members voiced reservation about the amount of work it will take to maintain this resource. Out of this discussion we decided to go ahead with the project, but two major points were determined:

  1. We will make a broad call on yulib for initial submissions to the resource and we will use the responses we receive to build the web site. Once we complete this first round, we will send out a follow up request for submissions and include the url for the resource in the message.
  2. After the web site is up and running, we will update it semi-annually and we will add the maintenance of the resource into the permanent SCOPA administrative calendar.

C. Erika volunteered to contact Diane Turner about posting the call for publication information to yulib. She also offered to develop and maintain the resource and Dajin offered to help mount it on the web.

D. Dajin reported that he has nearly finished adding the list of forums from 1998 to the web site.

Pending forums:

A. Suzanne announced a forum featuring recipients of SCOPA grants for the 1998 recipients will be held either April 27 or April 29.

B. Jennifer reported that David Stern is willing to do a forum on expert systems in the science libraries sometime in May and that Elizabeth Fairman of the British Art Center is willing to do a future forum.

C. Xin said she planned to contact John Ryden of Yale University Press after discussing the idea with Chris Weideman.

D. Jim reported that Angela Kane of the United Nations Department of Public Information and Jean Hirons of the CONSER program at the Library of Congress have agreed to do future forums.

E. Xin put forward an idea of having a series of brown bags where professionals from around the library system could discuss their positions. It was agreed that this is a good idea and we resolved to look into establishing it.

Respectfully submitted,

Tom Hyry
