Future Forums
- Erika proposed a possible SCOPA forum by Bob Strauss, President of the Preservation Technology Inc. The focus of this forum would be on the progress of the company's processing of Yale's project-the massive deacidification of old Yale government document serials. The forum will enhance Yale staff's knowledge of preservation processes and ways to preserve library materials.
- Tom suggested that the forum should 1) be oriented for the general interest of all library staff, for example, how preservation process would affect library services in general; 2) minimize the possibility of commercial aspect of selling services and products.
- It was also suggested this forum be presented as a joint program of SCOPA and the Preservation Department. Both David Wall and Bob Strauss will speak on different perspectives of the Yale's project.
- Tom reported that the forum with Joanne Rudof on a film screening of the Holocaust victims would proceed as planned in the Linsly-Chittenden Hall around December 8-9. The event is scheduled outside of the library building because of the special contents of the film and the required film viewing space and equipment.
- A brief discussion took place on Xin's earlier suggestion for a forum by Professor Peter Kindlmann. Dajin mentioned that he looked at the notes of Professor Kindlmann's address to Yale graduate students on the web and his forwarded message about the public digital archiving of scientific and scholarly research literature was very interesting. SCOPA could invite Professor Kidlmann to talk about the development of digital information and digital learning. Jennifer suggested that topic should be chosen carefully as there are many issues in this area. She agreed to identify some key speakers on the possible topics. It is agreed that this forum will be further discussed on the next SCOPA meeting.
- Considering there was a lack of questions from the audience at the last presentation by Scott, Jim will send out an email and ask the attendees to submit their questions to him in advance for the next session of Scott's talk to the Yale staff.
SCOPA grants
- Erika asked about the progress of the review process for 1999 SCOPA grant applications. Suzanne reported that two LMC members (Sue Crockford-Peters and Max Marmor) were reviewing the applications. About 5-6 applications are being considered. The final announcement of the recipients will go out in the YULIB list in December. In addition, the SCOPA Grants Subcommittee will send a courtesy letter to every applicant at the end of the review process.
- Susan has asked the 1998 SCOPA recipients to send in a final report on the results of their projects supported by SCOPA grants. Two reports have been received so far and posted on the SCOPA website.
Mentoring Program
- Tom asked for more input or feedback on the summary document he drafted for the recent SCOPA's efforts to foster a mentoring program for new Yale librarians. He will send the draft document as an email attachment to the SCOPA members again for comments.
- Erika will re-post the request for submission of Yale librarians' recent publications and professional committee duties in the Profdev-list and refer to the URL for the SCOPA web page on current Yale librarians' professional achievements in the out-going message.
Next SCOPA meeting
The next SCOPA meeting is scheduled for the Thursday (December 2) following the Thanksgiving week.
Respectfully submitted,
Dajin Sun
