A. Announcements
-
Xin announced that the forum featuring John Ryden, Director of Yale University Press, that is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 18th is ready to go.
-
Jim reported that one of the dates for Scott's talk will need to be moved. Jim will post the changes soon.
-
Diane commented that the New Librarian Orientation that was given on Oct. 12 went very well.
All members agreed.
-
B. Mentoring system
-
SCOPA members reflected on the 2nd focus group meeting with potential mentors that took place on Oct. 5. Lengthy discussions were given about the possible ways to facilitate mentorship (e.g. brown bag lunches with substantial contents) and mechanisms tha
t would make the new attempt successful (e.g. outline expectations of mentors, set up feed-back mechanisms). All agreed that the best working system is an informal one, and that it is worth the effort to provide the mentoring opportunity to needed profes
sionals.
-
Tom suggested to create a report of the two focus groups, to which SCOPA can add conclusions about mentoring and then outline suggestions for those relationships. The report will then be posted on SCOPA website, and include the URL in any messages SCOPA
poste to YULIB-L or PROVDEV-L calling for participants in the program.
-
Erika will send notes from the 2nd focus group meeting (Oct. 5) to Tom. Tom will combine these with notes from the 1st focus group meeting (May 25) to draft a report for SCOPA members to discuss at the next meeting.
-
Jim will initiate phone calls to potential mentors to start building a mentor-list.
-
C. SCOPA grants
-
Erika reported that the grant sub-committee will meet soon and will report back its progress after the meeting.
-
D. Upcoming forums and other action
items
-
Tom agreed to post the announcement about George Mile's talk on promotion this week.
-
Erika will post the next SCOPA grant announcement.
-
Tom suggested a possible future forum: screening of Joanne Rudof's (Fortunoff Video Archive) "witness" - a newly compiled video with several testimonies. Tom will make arrangement for its date and location.
-
On the information ethics forums, Jennifer reported via e-mail that Barbara Rockenback has made plans for the first forum featuring Martha Smith, which will take place on Dec. 13. Jennifer will follow up with Barbara on her final plan.
-
Next SCOPA meeting will take place on Oct. 28, at 11:30 a.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Xin Li
