SCOPA Minutes: 07/15/99

Present:  Suzanne Eggleston, Erika Heinen, Tom Hyry, Jennifer Kostelnik, Xin Li, Jim Shetler (Chair and Recorder), Dajin Sun

Absent:  Diane Turner

I. Announcements

A. The SCOPA forum of June 17 was a success. The forum consisted of five presentations by last year's SCOPA grant recipients. These were:

  1. Putting the Nuremberg Trial Proceedings on the Web (William Fray, Lisa Spar)

  2. Digitizing the 1931 Yale University Library Gazette (Marianna McKim)

  3. Revitalizing the Yale Bibliographical Press (Bridget Burke)

  4. Assessing Improved Network Access in the SML Starr Main Reference Room (Suzanne Eggleston substituting for Ethelene Whitmire)

  5. Creating a Personal Bibliographic Database Software Demonstration Service (Andrew Shimp, David Stern)

B. The professional development listserv has been established. At present approximately 30 librarians have subscribed.

II. Web pages for recent publications and committee activities by Yale librarians

A. Erika distributed copies of these web pages for comment by the group. At present the page for publications will only be a text document. When more information is collected, the possibility of creating a database of this information will be investigated. The group decided that the page for committee membership consist of two pages: one is organized by committees, and the other by librarians'names and their respective committee memberships.

B. When the pages go live, another broadcast will be made on as many library listservs as possible to obtain additional contributions.

C. The group will ask Diane to query LMC for additional contributions to these pages.

III. Pending forums

A. Suzanne suggested that we contact Diane to determine whether any notable people will be visiting the university and/or the library in the near future. If so, they may be contacted and asked to speak at a forum.

B. Jim announced that Jean Hirons (Head of CONSER, Library of Congress) has confirmed for a SCOPA presentation on September 20. The topic will probably be the Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program (SCCTP), but may be broader in scope.

C. Xin announced that John Ryden (Director of Yale University Press) would conduct a forum on Oct. 18. The topic will focus on the changes in the publishing industry in the past thirty years.

D. Some discussion centered on contacting Joan Swanekamp to see if it would be possible to conduct a forum introducing BIBCO and PCC.

E. Erika suggested that SCOPA pursue creating a series of informal brown bag lunches. These lunches will feature speakers from the Yale library community and focus on such things as curatorial travels, recent technology, etc.

Respectfully submitted,

Jim Shetler
