SCOPA Meeting Minutes

SCOPA Meeting Minutes -- April 16, 1998

Present: Chris Weideman (chair), DianShetler, Xin Li, Diane Goldenberg-Hart (recording), Diane Turner, Gillian Goldsmith, James

Absent: Suzanne Eggleston, Bridget Burke, Bill Fray

1. Grants subcommittee -- Gillian

a. Request for funding was submitted to Diane Turner

b. Extensions policy: Gilian spoke with Lou Volpi who recommended that funding should be closed out before the end of the 2nd fiscal year. In other words, successful applicants would receive funds in December, and have until the following December to spend them. SCOPA members agreed that this was a reasonable policy and voted that no extensions will be granted. Gillian will add this new policy to the Grants Subcommittee web site.

c. Forum for '97 participants: targeting the 1st week of June.

2. Web site -- Web site maintenance was not discussed due to Bill Fray's absence. Chris noted that we need a date for Ann Calabrisi's presentation last year.

3. Forums-in-progress updates:

a. Mike Morand, Asst. Secretary of the University, will speak on May 7 at 9:30 (jointly sponsored with MPSA).

b. Chris reported that she's waiting for a response from Ed Harris of the SCSU Library School.

c. From Bridget (via Chris): the director of the Connecticut Center for the Book has agreed to speak in late fall.

d. Tercentennial forum: Chris is getting mixed reactions to this idea; she's written to Linda Lorimer for reactions and is awaiting a response.

e. Faculty Support Program: Diane G. reported that she and Suzanne met with Danuta about the idea, who was very receptive, but suggested that the presentation be scheduled once the program is underway and there are results to report. She suggested the following individuals as possible presenters: Phil Long (ITS); herself, or Suzanne Lorimer (Library); John Mack Faragher (faculty). Danuta also proposed that a series of fora, or a multi-part program, focusing on a broader question, such as "where is the campus in terms of information technology?" might be an interesting idea. SCOPA members agreed that the Faculty Support Program was worthy of individual focus, but suggested that supporting presentations might be planned around it. For example, Chris proposed that someone who has considered instructional technologies from a theoretical, conceptual perspective, and perhaps on a national scale, be invited to speak early in the fall to lay a foundation for the Faculty Support Program forum. Similarly, Jim mentioned Paul Bracken, a Yale professor who has developed his own web resource for his Political Science course, Political Science 172bG (57172), STRATEGY, TECHNOLOGY, AND WAR. Jim agreed to ask him if he'd be willing to speak to the Library.

f. Diane Turner reminded everyone that there would likely be a new AUL for Technical Services in the fall and that that person should be invited by SCOPA to make a presentation.

g. Diane Turner mentioned that Danuta is very interested in collaborating with SCOPA on a forum regarding a customer service model for the Library -- Chris will contact Danuta regarding her idea.
